Pre-Season | Brechin City 1-3 Arbroath - By Steven Mew

City’s pre-season preparations continued at a sun soaked Glebe Park yesterday afternoon against near neighbours Arbroath.

Former City Manager Dick Campbell fielded a strong side not too dissimilar to the one that finished in a comfortable mid-table position in the Championship last season.

City's task was not made any easier with two injuries early on. New loan signing Leeroy Makovora was injured in the warm-up and replaced in the starting 11 by a trialist, whilst Connor Coupe was forced off after just 4 minutes with Scott Cusick taking his place.

The first real chance of the game came after 6 minutes when Lewis McMinn had to be alert to keep out Dale Hilson from point blank range.

Dave McKay, making his first appearance as a signed City player after appearing as a trialist against Cove on Tuesday, was first to threaten for Brechin with a long range effort which flew over.

This was the start of a good spell for City. On 11 minutes a trialist shot wide of the post and just before the quarter hour mark, the same player took down a cross from a fellow trialist after some great work from Scott Reekie but was denied by Gaston.

The Lichties started to take control and should have been ahead on 27 minutes when former City man Colin Hamilton screwed wide at the near post when it looked easier to score. A few minutes later, McMinn parried away a low shot from Bobby Linn before David Gold found the side netting.

Arbroath continued to surge forward in search of the opener with City fortunate that the likes of Bobby Linn didn't have their shooting boots on. The experienced winger twice blazed over the bar when you'd have expected him to hit the target.

With the scoreline goalless at the break, Manager Mark Wilson made one change with Sean McIntosh replaceing Dave McKay at left back.

It took a huge slice of luck for the visitors to open the scoring 9 minutes into the second half. SCOTT STEWART, a half time substitute, drilled a low shot from the edge of the box which went in with the aid of a deflection.

Five minutes later SCOTT STEWART was on target again as he doubled the Lichties lead. Jonathan Page did well to block a shot inside the box, however the ball fell invitingly for the ex-Airdrie midfielder who swept into the far corner.

Mark Wilson called the changes on the hour mark as Luc Bollan, Ross Brown, Jimmy Scott and Rory Currie entered the fray.

City would go on to reduce the deficit on 78 minutes. Keeper Derek Gaston could only palm an effort into the air and JONATHAN PAGE was on hand to nod into the net, despite the efforts of the defender on the line.

Four minutes later City almost grabbed an equaliser when an excellent cross from Sean McIntosh found Jimmy Scott at the back post, but his powerful header found the side netting.

At the other end, Dale Hilson nodded over from Gavin Swankie's cross before the result was put beyond doubt with several minutes remaining. A cut-back from the left side found LUKE DONNELLY who converted, despite McMinn getting a hand to it.
