Match Preview | Brora Rangers v Brechin City - By Steven Mew

For the second consecutive season, our Highland League campaign comes down a nail-biting finale as take on Brora Rangers at King George V Park in Golspie, with City still in with a chance of clinching the title.

However in a slight contrast to last season, a win may not prove to be enough with Buckie Thistle currently topping the league by goal difference following their 7-0 win over Strathspey. The permutations are that City require to better Buckie’s result at home to Keith in terms of points, or if both sides win then City must better the scoreline by 3 goals or more.

It should also be noted that Fraserburgh in 3rd place still have a mathematical chance of snatching the title, albeit they rely on both City and Buckie losing whilst making up goal difference in the process.

City head into the fixture off the back of a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Keith at Kynoch Park in midweek, although were left to rue numerous spurned opportunities to make it a much more comfortable evening.

With drainage work now underway at Dudgeon Park, tomorrow’s fixture will take place 6 miles down the road at King George V Park, home of Golspie Sutherland. Brora Rangers are currently on a poor run of 5 games without a win in the league, albeit they did lift silverware at the tail end of last month as they defeated Fraserburgh in the Highland League Cup.

TEAM NEWS
City are likely to welcome back Danny Handling to the squad after missing out in midweek, however there are still question marks over Hamish Thomson, Marc Scott and Matthew Wright who will be assessed ahead of the game.

MANAGERS COMMENTS
Manager Gavin Price gave his thoughts on the midweek victory over Keith, he said, "When we watched the game back we had 29 shots on goal so to only score one is obviously disappointing - we actually created more chances than we did on Saturday where we scored 6.

"It's just one of these things - Keith were at home and looking to get something out of the game as well. The important thing was getting the 3 points first and foremost but it was frustrating we couldn't add at least a couple of goals to the tally which would have been important."

"We had to take more risks in the game and asked the defenders to be a bit braver in how we play so they did well. To control the game we need to do all aspects and Saturday will be similar in that respect.

On the winning goal, he commented, "Kevin has that in his locker and we encourage him to get into these areas and shoot. We see it at training all the time how effective he is and luckily that one on Tuesday was bang on the money.

Looking ahead to tomorrow's crucial final-day fixture against Brora Rangers, Gavin added, "We will probably have an eye on what the score is at Buckie as it might change how we approach the game but first and foremost we are playing against a good side and we've got to try and win the game.

"As we get into the second half we'll maybe have a clearer picture of what we need to do. It's an exciting time for everyone involved at the Club and we'll go out there, do our very best and see where it takes us."

PREVIOUS MEETING
Brechin City 2-1 Brora Rangers - 12 August 2023
After missing a host of guilt-edged opportunities in the second half, City survived a nervy ending to record a crucial victory over Brora Rangers near the start of the season.

City had the opportunity to put the game to bed numerous times after going 2-1 up shortly after the hour mark, but City defended resolutely to ensure all 3 points stayed in Brechin.

Grady McGrath had opened the scoring, only for Jordan Macrae to equalise for the visitors just a few minutes later. Marc Scott netted the winner shortly after the hour mark.
