Match Report - By Match Secy
Kevin Byers seems to score a candidate for "Goal of the Season" every week at present, but he wants he and his team mates to roll up their sleeves and show the battling qualities required, as they did on Saturday during a day where silky soccer often had to go out the window
Afterwards he said: "We were flat at times but when you're at the top you get the breaks. It's easier to win even if you're not at your best."
However, Byers believes City - the only team yet to lose a game in Scotland's four senior leagues - can continue their unbeaten run.
He added: "We believe we will win every game. That's a challenge for us, but the manager always encourages us to go out and express ourselves
We're unbeaten against every team, we're doing great and if we can keep that going until at least Christmas we can make it difficult for teams to catch us."
Brechin boss Michael O'Neill was impressed by the will-to-win shown by his players after Queen's Park equalised late in the game.
He said: "After they levelled the match, we showed great strength of character to come back and get the win.
"The windy conditions didn't make for freeflowing football. It was important we scored first and we could have added another couple before half-time."
The visitors created the first chance of the game when Tony Quinn latched onto a long ball but his low drive was deflected for a corner.
City rallied and went close when Willie Dyer's cross looped just over the bar.
At the other end Ross Dunlop had a great chance when a Jack Henry cross found him unmarked but he headed wide.
As City pushed forward Damiano Agostini cleared off the line from Charlie King.
But Byers broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when he fired home a 20-yard drive.
Just before half-time, Queen's keeper David Crawford was tested by a King strike and Neil Janczyk shot over from 18 yards.
The home side were unlucky not to double their lead after the interval when Gary Twigg failed to connect with Byers' deep cross.
With 10 minutes to go Spiders keeper David Crawford pulled off a superb point-blank save to deny City sub John Baird. The Queen's goalkeeper diving full length to tip away Baird's net bound flick.
The shotshop's efforts spurred the visitors on and Quinn flicked on for sub Ian Watt to equalise in 81 minutes.
However, just a minute later sub Darren Smith grabbed Brechin's winner when he slammed home a King cross. A very composed finish from the City skipper.
In the dying minutes Byers ran from his own half into the visitors' penalty area but his shot was held by Crawford.
Spiders coach Gardner Speirs said: "I'm disappointed to lose after getting back into the game but we'll play worse than that and win. The goal we scored was well deserved and we took the game to Brechin."
Brechin expect to take a decent travelling support north to Peterhead this Saturday. To book your place on the Supporters' Club coach contact Jim Craig (01356) 623151.
