Match Report - By Gus Fairlie
City's unbeaten League run for season 2008 - 09 was shattered in spectacular fashion by Peterhead at Balmoor On Saturday.
Two changes were made from the previous weeks win over Queens Park - Jon Seeley came back into central defence for David Murie and Darren Smith started for Ian Nimmo in the middle of the park.
City started brightly and following a sharp exchange of passes on the edge of the box in eight minutes, skipper Darren Smith slotted a right foot shot into the left hand side to put Brechin 1 - 0 up. At this stage City looked well in command against a Peterhead side who had failed to score in of their previous four outings.
However, after 19 minutes the City defence failed to clear a corner and a chip to the the far post was nodded home by Ross to level the scores. Worse was to come 2 minutes later when, following another scramble in the box, Bavidge was left alone and he fired home. We sat back waiting for the City fight back but it never came as the home side surged forward. Bavidge got two attempts at controlling a ball into the box and after the second he fired home to put the homesters 3 - 1 up. Worse was to follow a minute before half time when, after City gave the ball away in the middle of the park, Graeme Sharp smashed home a superb 25 yard strike to put the Blue Toon 4 -1 up at half time.
City regrouped in the second half and forced three excellent saves from Kula. However, Peterhead had the last word when Cowie slotted home right at the death to compound the misery for the excellent Brechin following.
A disappointing result no doubt, but if you had said to me at the start of the season that the first defeat of the season would come in November then I would have been happy with that. Lets hope we get back on the rails at Arbroath on Saturday.
