Match Report - By John Hoey
Brechin City and Forfar shared the spoils in the first Angus derby of the season at Station Park which ended in a 1-1 draw
Substitute Charlie King scored the City goal with twelve minutes of the game remaining, cancelling out Chris Templeman's opener for the Loons after 59 minutes.
City boss Jim Weir made a couple of changes to the team that drew with Stenhousemuir last week-end with Craig Nelson replacing David Scott in goal and Barry Smith coming in for Charlie King in midfield.
City won a free-kick at the edge of the Forfar box after four minutes when Craig Molloy was fouled by Graham Gibson.
Rory McAllister fired the free-kick right against the defensive wall and David McKenna just failed to connect with the rebound.
Forfar had their first chance of the match after eight minutes when former City favourite Chris Templeman headed an Iain Campbell cross from the right just over the crossbar.
City had an opportunity four minutes later when McAllister broke clear of the Loons defence and passed to Mark Docherty but the midfielder fired just wide. McAlllister had a chance himself just a couple of minutes later when he cut inside the box but he shot just wide of Euan McLean’s left-hand post.
Paul McLean was next to have a go when he found himself in space in the Forfar box after 23 minutes but his shot was blocked.
The Loons scorned a great chance just five minutes before the break when Templeman headed the ball across the box for David Mowat who fired over the bar from good position and Dale Hilson passed up an even better opportunity a couple of minutes later when he had time and space to score but he steered the ball wide of the target.
City almost got their noses in front ten minutes into the second-half when Paul Lunan, in attempting to clear a David McKenna cross from the right, almost blasted the ball into his own net.
Forfar hit back though and grabbed the lead after 59 minutes with a typical goal from Templeman.
Lunan made ground on the right and delivered a good cross into the box where Templeman rose above the City defence to nod the ball in at the near post.
Another excellent Lunan cross from the right after 68 minutes caused all sorts of problems for the City defence but luckily, another ex City favourite – Graham Gibson just failed to connect.
However, City battled on and they got right back into the game in the 78th minute when they scored the equaliser.
Neil Janczyk played a short corner from the right to Kevin Byers who swung over a cross across the face of the penalty-area for Charlie King who swept a low drive into the bottom corner of the net.
With eight minutes remaining, a King pass gave McAllister a chance but the striker’s low drive was well saved by McLean.
Forfar hit back straight away and Mowat spurned a glorious chance right in front of goal three minutes later, and right on the final whistle, the same player shot over the bar when it seemed easier to score.
