Match Report - By John Hoey
Brechin City moved into the Third Round of the CIS Cup after an epic victory against near neighbours Dundee which went all the way to penalty-kicks.
With the score tied at 2-2 after extra-time, penalties from Rory McAllister, Calum Booth and Kevin Byers was enough to send City into the next round, with Dundee's only penalty conversion was scored by Gary Harkins.
City players left the field to a wholly deserved standing ovation after their magnificent effort.
Brechin started well and threatened in the first minute when Rory McAllister headed a Paul McLean pass into the path of David McKenna but the striker mis-cued his shot and the ball went lamely past the post.
Dundee gradually assumed control and a Leigh Griffiths cross from the left was headed just wide by Colin McMenamin.
Nelson re-acted well to save a Craig Forsyth header after 22 minutes and the big keeper brought off a tremendous save seconds later when he tipped a Jamie Adams header over the bar.
City came more into the game as the half wore on and a Barry Smith 25 yard drive after 37 minutes went just past the post and a couple of minutes later a McAllister free-kick was well held by Rab Douglas.
City went right on the attack after the break and McAllister came close in the 47th minute when a point-blank Douglas save denied him.
However, City were sensationally reduced to ten men after 57 minutes when Paul McLean was sent off by referee Syephen Finnie for a second bookable offence after a challenge on Griffiths.
Ten-man City battled on and they dramatically grabbed the lead five minutes later when McAllister picked up the ball in the box and then cut in before dispatching a low right-foot drive beyond Douglas and the same player sent the Brechin supporters into ecstacy a couple of minutes later when he raced into the box and smashed a left-foot drive beyond Douglas.
The Dark Blues though fought right back and theyvdramatically levelled the match with two goals from Griffiths in three minutes.
He scored the first with a cracking 25 yard left-foot drive in 71 minutes and a couple of minutes later a great piece of skill from him in the box ended with him slotting home the equaliser.
Griffiths had a great chance to wrap up victory with a couple of minutes remaining when Dundee won a penalty after Gary Harkins was brought down in the box but he blasted the penalty high over the bar.
With the score tied 2-2 at full-time the game went into extra-time and it was Dundee's turn to be reduced to ten men when Craig Forsyth was given his marching orders for a tackle on McAllister. As extra-time moved on it became clear that the match would go all the way to penalty-kicks and so it proved with City coming up trumps with converted penalties from McAllister, Calum Booth and Kevin Byers while Harkins was Dundee's only scorer.
