Brechin City moved up to second place in the Irn Bru Second Division after a great 3-1 away win against Dumbarton at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium.
Calum Booth, David McKenna and Rory McAllister were on the mark for City who led by 2-0 at half-time. Derek Carcary scored for Dumbarton.
Manager Jim Weir made just one change to the side that was defeated 2-0 by Motherwell on Tuesday night with striker McKenna coming in for Kevin Byers.
Dumbarton pressed from the start and Andy Geggan tried a right-foot drive from 25 yards after a couple of minutes which went just past Craig Nelson’s right-hand post.
A Stirling Smith shot from 25 yards was parried by Nelson three minutes later and Gary Smith hooked the rebound just past.
The Sons were surging forward in the early stages and Nelson came to City’s rescue again after 7 minutes when he tipped a Carcary drive over the bar.
Andrew Cook eased the pressure a bit when he had a half-chance for City in the 10th minute when he picked up a short pass from Booth but the home defence blocked his effort.
McKenna had another half-chance in the 29th minute but the Sons defence again blocked his shot and second later a Neil Janczyk 30 yard drive went well over the bar.
City were coming more into the game and they grabbed the lead in the 36th minute with a brilliant goal from Booth.
The youngster picked up a great through pass from McKenna and took a couple of strides before blasting a superb left-foot drive well beyond the reach of Michael White.
City’s confidence grew after this goal and they went two goals up just four minutes later.
Craig Molloy picked up a loose ball in the Dumbarton box and passed to the unmarked McKenna who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner of the net via the post.
City had an opportunity to further increase their lead two minutes into the second-half when a Janczyk shot from just within the box went just past the post.
The hosts hit back, and a Smith header from a Carcary cross went well over the bar, and seconds later, Geggan, who was completely unmarked in the City penalty-box sent another header well wide of the target.
The Sons had a great chance to reduce the deficit in the 72nd minute when Geggan was clean through, but Nelson brought off a great save to deny him.
However, Dumbarton did pull a goal back just a minute later with an absolutely superb strike from Carcary.
Picking the ball up around 30 yards from goal, the midfielder unleashed a tremendous left-foot drive which sailed into the top corner of the net.
Carcary broke free again in the 82nd minute but Nelson dived low to his left to block the shot and seconds later, the keeper brought off another fine save to deny Geggan.
However, City wrapped up the points with a couple of minutes remaining.
Jamie Redman picked up the ball wide on the right and played a short pass to substitute Charlie King who crossed into the box for McAllister who had the simplest of tasks in nodding the ball past White.
