Match Report - By John Hoey
Brechin City remain at the top of the Second Division table after a hard-fought 3-1 win against Airdrie United at Glebe park in what was an extremely well-contested and competitive match.
Neil Janczyk, Rory McAllister and Craig Molloy were on the mark for City while Craig Nelson brought off a superb penalty-save minutes from the end to deny the visitors at that stage of the match, a second equalising goal.
Manager Jim Weir kept faith with the side that had performed so well the previous week at East Fife, and with Charlie King out injured until next season, there were places on the bench for the remaining five members of the City squad.
City pressed from the start and there were early chances for McAllister and Jamie Redman, but it wasn't long before the opening goal arrived, and what a cracker it was.
Ewan Moyes pushed forward from defence but was brought down at the edge of the Airdrie penalty-box by Ryan Donnelly.
Both Janczyk and McAllister lined up to take the kick, but it was Janny who won the day, flighting a superb left-foot drive into the bottom corner of the net, giving Diamonds keeper Mark Ridgers no chance.
City kept up the pressure, but they were shocked when the visitors equalised in the 26th minute.
A long through ball was collected by Anthony Watt who dispatched a low drive into the bottom corner of the net, giving Nelson no chance.
The second-half started off with both teams pushing hard for the lead, and it was City who got their noses in front in the 53rd minute with another superb free-kick.
Molloy was brought down at the edge of the Airdrie penalty-area and referee David Somers awraded the home side a free-kick.
Both Janczyk and McAllister lined up to take the kick again, but this time the roles were reversed, with Rory drilling home a terrific right-foot drive.
The Diamonds battled on though and they threw everything forward in an effort to grab another equaliser, and they must have thought that they were going to achieve that with six minutes remaining when referee Somers awarded them a penalty after he indicated that Paul McLean had fouled substitute Scott Sally in the box.
It seemed a harsh decision as most City supporters felt that that the young full-back had challenged fairly for the ball, but their outrage turned to delight, when Nelson brought off a superb save from Paul Lovering who fired the rebound over the bar.
Airdrie were stunned at the penalty miss and they paid the price deep into injury time when Molloy, who had covered every blade of grass of the Glebe Park turf over the course of the 90 minutes broke free and fired home a wonderful right-foot drive to wrap up the points for the league leaders.
