Brechin City 0 Forfar Athletic 0

Match Report - By John Hoey

City and Forfar shared the spoils after a 0-0 draw in an entertaining local derby.

Despite the score-line, the game was keenly contested with City having the better of the opening 45 minutes and the Loons dominating the second-half.

City manager Jim Weir had one enforced change to make.

Ewan Moyes who has been such an important member of the team this season failed to recover from an injury sustained in training at Hibernian which meant that David White had to be recalled from his loan spell at Newtongrange Star, and he lined up at the heart of the City defence alongside Gerry McGlauchlan.

The visitors had a half-chance after just a couple of minutes but David Mowatt sent his long-range effort just wide of the target.

City had a good chance in the 17th minute when a great run down the left from Calum Booth ended with the winger’s shot being deflected for a corner and a minute later, Rory McAllister outpaced Michael Bolochoweckyj before firing in a shot which cannoned back off the post.

The Loons hit back and a Bryan Deasley angular drive on the half-hour mark was well saved by Craig Nelson.

City won a free-kick in the 33rd minute, and McAllister’s kick was superbly turned onto the post by Scott Gallagher.

Both sides had chances just before half-time with ex City favourite Chris Temnpleman’s long-range shot tipped over the bar by Nelson while at the other end, another McAllister free-kick just skimmed the top of the crossbar.

The visitors pushed forward after the break and a 25 yard drive from Martyn Fotheringham went just past in the 53rd minute.

The Loons kept up the early pressure and another long-range effort on the hour mark, this time from Mark McCulloch went just wide of the target.

City hit back, and a fierce, angular drive from McAllister from a wide right position went just wide.

A great run from Dale Hilson who was having an outstanding game in the 71st minute spelt danger for the home defence but the diminutive midfielder’s final shot went straight into the arms of Nelson, and second later the same player collected a good pass from Templeman in the box but chipped his shot over the bar.

The Loons were dominating but City came close with five minutes remaining when Gallagher dived low to save a great shot from McAllister and in the final seconds a tremendous left-foot drive from McCulloch was deflected against the crossbar.
