Match Report - By John Hoey
Brechin City have reached the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup for the first time in their long 105 year old history after a hard-fought but thoroughly deserved victory against Buckie Thistle at Victoria Park.
First-half goals from David McKenna and Rory McAllister ensured victory for City who now eagerly await tomorrow's draw.
Although the Jags huffed and puffed, Craig Nelson had only one save of note to make and City's clinical finishing and strength, committment and endeavour in defence and midfield proved too much for their gutsy opponents.
Brechin City manager Jim Weir made a couple of changes to the team that started against Livingston on Tuesday night.
Kevin Byers replaced Jamie Redman in right midfield while Gary Fusco came in for Andrew Cook.
Buckie had the first chance after 3 minutes when full-back Bob Duncan tried a shot from 25 yards but his effort was well wide of the target.
Rory McAllister fired in a shot from 15 yards four minutes later after collecting a David McKenna cut- back but his effort too, was wide of the mark.
However, City grabbed the lead in the 18th minute with a cracker of a goal from McKenna. The striker picked up the ball wide on the right and hit home a teriffic left-foot shot which sailed into the top corner of the net.
City continued to press for a second goal and it came courtesy of McAllister in the 30th minute
Rory picked up the ball on the left, neatly turned his man and bore in on goal before curling home a superb right-foot drive which gave Kevin Main in the Thistle goal absolutely no chance.
The hosts had the chance to reduce the deficit five minutes later when the ball fell kindly for Zander Sutherland in the box but the winger hurried his shot and was well wide of the target.
Brechin pressed for a further goal at the beginning of the second-half but it was Buckie who came close to scoring in the 54th minute when Craig Nelson brought off a tremendous save to deny centre-back Michael Morrison who should have scored.
City should have wrapped things up in the 62nd minute when a great pass from Gary Fusco created an opening for McAllister whose right-foot drive cannoned back off Main's left-hand post and Main brought off a great save to prevent McKenna scoring his second and City's third goal six minutes later.
City continued to have the better of the exchanges as the half wore on and at the final whistle there were rewarded with a tremendous ovation from their supporters who had made the long journey north to see a historic victory
