City ended their recent dismal run of results with a deserved 3-1 victory away to Stenhousemuir.
Rory McAllister, back in the side after a three-game suspension marked his comeback in style by scoring a hat-trick, two of those goals from the penalty-spot.
City now need just one point from their final home game of the season on Saturday against Ayr United to reach the play-off semi-finals where their opponents, if they are successful will be Cowdenbeath who they played in last season’s First Division Play-Off Final.
There was a surprise for City supporters just prior to the kick-off when it was announced that David Scott would be in goal, replacing Craig Nelson who had injured a hand in training on Thursday night.
Apart from McAllister’s return, Ewan Moyes and Gerry McGlauchlan were in their normal places in the centre of defence.
City got off to the dream start after just four minutes.
Craig Molloy was clean through on goal only to be brought down in the box by former City keeper Chris McCluskey. Referee Kevin Clancy immediately pointed to the penalty-spot and McAllister stepped up to send the ball into the bottom corner of the net, sending McCluskey the wrong way.
City kept up the pressure on the Stenny rearguard but it was the hosts who scored next when a Mike Devlin header levelled the match with the City players claiming that the ball hadn’t crossed the line.
City dominated the remainder of the half, and they got their reward with just a minute remaining when Mitch Megginson broke clear and squared the ball across the penalty-box to McAllister who made no mistake.
City dominated proceedings after the break with shots from McAllister (twice) and Molloy going close but the visitors wrapped up the points in the final minute.
Molloy pushed himself forward into the Stenny box and was brought down by McCluskey who was immediately booked again and then sent off and McAllister made his usual immaculate job from the penalty spot.
