The opening stages of the match were evenly contested but Albion raced into a two-goal lead within the first twenty minutes.

The visitors first goal came in the 16th minute when a Steven Lawless corner from the left was headed out by Mick Dunlop only as far as Rovers defender Michael O’ Byrne who fired a low first-time drive into the bottom corner of the net.

This goal gave Albion confidence and they doubled their lead four minutes later.

A stray Neil Janczyk clearance was picked up by Ryan McStay who fired home a superb right-foot drive which took a deflection on its way into the net.

City forced the early pace after the break and they were desperately unlucky not to reduce the deficit in the 62nd minute when Albion keeper Derek Gaston did well to palm a fierce Scott Smith drive onto the post and seconds later, Bryan Hodge sent a low shot just inches past the post.

However, Albion wrapped up the points with a third goal three minutes later.

Craig Nelson made a hash of a goal-line clearance and the ball was picked up by Lawless who crossed into the box for John Gemmell who knocked it back into the path of Robert Love who hooked the ball into the roof of the net.

City scored a late consolation when substitute striker Jim Lister headed home a David McKenna cross but Albion restored their three goal advantage on the stroke of full-time when Scott Chaplain converted a penalty after Gary Fusco had handled a free-kick in the box.
