Brechin City 2 Cowdenbeath 2

Match Report - By John Hoey

Brechin City have secured their Second Division staus for next season after a deserved share of the points against champions Cowdenbeath after a 2-2 draw at Glebe Park.

On-Loan Kilmarnock striker Rory McKenzie was the City hero netting twice in the first-half to give City a two-goal lead and although the Blue Brazil reduced the deficit with a goal from Marc McKenzie after 30 minutes and drew level early in the second-half with a goal from John Armstrong, City held on for the vital point that ensures that Second Division football will be played again at the Glebe next season.

Manager Jim Weir made just one change to the side who were defeated by Stenhousemuir last Saturday with Jim Lister replacing David Crawford who dropped to the bench.

City opened the scoring from the penalty-spot in the 22nd minute when McKenzie was brought down just inside the box by Scott Linton and the young striker picked himself up to blast home the opener.

Mckenzie was on the mark again just three minutes later when he collected a pass from Craig Molloy on the right side of the penalty area before taking a couple of paces then firing home a superb right-foot drive which gave Cowden keeper Lee Winton no chance.

The champions though hit right back and they reduced the deficit on the half-hour mark when McKenzie slotted the ball home after the City defence had failed to clear their lines.

The visitors began the second-half on the offensive and it was no surprise when they grabbed the equaliser in ther 54th minute when Armstrong powered home a header from a Lewis Milne corner from the left.

The remainder of the half was fairly evenly contested with few opportunities for either side with Cit holding on comfortably for the point they needed.
