East Fife 0 Brechin City 3
Brechin City finished off their Second Division campaign with a comprehensive and deserved 3-0 victory over East Fife at Bayview Stadium.
Johnny Brown with a brace, and David McKenna scored the City goals which all came in the last twenty minutes and the result provides the team with a real confidence booster ahead of Wednesday night's eagerly anticipated First Division Play-Off Semi-Final tie first leg against Second Division runners-up Alloa Athletic at Glebe Park.
Manager Ray McKinnon repeated the pattern of the previous two games and rested a number of players. With no Brown, Hay, Moyes, Fusco, Trouten, Carcary and Jackson in the starting line-up, the team had an unfamiliar look about it but they coped well in the opening 45 minutes when the blustery conditions made things difficult for both sides but City had the best chance of the first-half after 13 minutes when a tremendous right-foot 25 yard drive from Alex Pursehouse was tipped over the bar by Calum Ansell in the East Fife goal.
It was more of the same immediately after the break with goalmouth chances were few and far between but as the game wore on City began to assert their authority and they grabbed the opener with a great goal after 70 minutes.
The ball was played out wide on the right to skipper for the day Garry Brady and he sent an inch-perfect cross into the box for David McKenna who volleyed home a superb right-foot drive drive.
City then replaced striker Beau Longridge with Johnny Brown with the defender assuming an attacking midfield role and this move reaped rewards for the team within a couple of minutes.
Ex City striker Paul McManus under pressure, headed the ball from his own penalty-area into the path of Brown who wasted no time in dispatching a scorching right-foot drive into the far corner of the net and Brown rubbed salt into the East Fife wounds five minutes later when he collected a pass from Ryan Stewart and cut inside Fifers defender Scott Durie before curling an unstoppable shot way beyond the reach of Ansell.
