Match Report - By John Hoey

FORFAR ATHLETIC 2 BRECHIN CITY 0

Brechin City’s hopes of making it three derby wins on the trot came to a halt at Station Park where Forfar Athletic deservedly triumphed by 2-0.

It was a disappointing performance from City who never really looked as if they would take anything from the game.

Dale Hilson fired the Loons into the lead just six minutes before the break and a goal on the stroke of full-time from substitute Ross Campbell who had come on just a couple of minute earlier wrapped up the points for the hosts.

City made a couple of changes to the side that beat Arbroath in the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup last Saturday. Craig Molloy and Stuart Anderson dropped to the bench, making way for Greg Cameron and Andy Ryan.

Forfar manager Dick Campbell included new loan signing Craig Storie from Aberdeen in his opening eleven while Stuart Malcolm replaced Marvin Andrews in central defence.

Forfar threatened after eight minutes when a Gavin Swankie cross from the left was scooped over the bar by Hilson but City hit back two minutes later when a superb 25 yard drive from Greg Cameron brought off a wonderful save from Rab Douglas.

Hilson came close again for the Loons after 23 minutes when he collected the ball on the left and dribbled into the penalty-box only to see his shot blocked by Graeme Smith.

Brechin hit back once more and a wonderful pass from Darren Petrie found Alan Trouten in space in the Forfar box but Douglas came to his side’s rescue once more bringing off a tremendous save to deny the City midfielder.

Forfar though, were stringing some good passes together and they grabbed the lead seven minutes from the break. Jamie McCluskey picked up the ball and crossed into the box for Hilson who dispatched a low drive past Smith.

Forfar started the second-half as they had finished the opening 45 minutes and they should have doubled their lead after 53 minutes when a Hilson cross from the left found Chris Templeman whose first-time shot was instinctively blocked by Smith. The Loons continued to press and they came close again in the 62nd minute when a Swankie cross was headed just wide by Hilson.

City were creating very little in the way of clear-cut chances but they did threaten in the 78th minute when a great pass from Trouten found substitute Derek Carcary who weaved his way into the home penalty-box and fired in a shot which was well held by Douglas.

With time fast running out, Forfar wrapped up the points with just three minutes remaining.

An Iain Campbell free-kick was headed into the path of substitute Ross Campbell by Templeman and the striker made no mistake from close-range.
