Match Report - By Brechin City FC
Ultimately honours were shared in the sunshine at Stair Park yesterday but Brechin will perhaps feel that they should have come away with all three after leading the game deep into injury time and only being denied by a freakish goal direct from a corner.
Brechin opened brightly and Craig Molloy soon tested the home keeper with a right foot shot. City gained their first corner on 17 minutes and from it grabbed the lead.Bobby Barr swung in a decent cross and Colin Hamilton rose highest at the far post to power home his first goal for the club. Better was to follow in the 24th minute as City doubled their lead. Bobby Barr made a great jinking run down the left hand side and cut the ball back where a superb dummy from Alan Trouten found Craig Molloy in space and Tiger duly despatched his shot low to the keeper's right. For the remainder of the first half City were in control but just couldn't add to their lead.
In the second half, Bobby Barr went on a great run on the left hand side getting in behind the home defence and fired a shot just wide of the far post. City had looked comfortable up to this point but the complexion of the game changed on 56 minutes when Stranraer pulled a goal back. City failed to clear their lines following a free kick and when the ball was played wide Robertson crossed and following a goalmouth scramble Forde forced the ball home.
Stranraer, with the wind behind them now, really started to force the issue and put City under extreme pressure. Alan Trouten picked up a strain and was replaced by Robert Thomson and then Gerry McLauchlan was brought on in place of Bobby Barr to help shore up the defence. City held firm and then with three minutes to go a superb Callum Tapping pass played in Andy Jackson but he was denied by the onrushing Fahey. With the clock showing almost 94 minutes Stranraer got a final corner and with all 22 players in the box, the corner sailed over the head of everyone before nestling in the far corner of the net to earn Stranraer a share of the spoils.
Final mention must go the magnificent turn out of Brechin fans [ including the Brown family from Fraserburgh!] - there will not be many more clubs who take more than 50 down the long and winding road to Stranraer this season.
