Match Report - By John Hoey
Brechin City 1 Peterhead 1
A late goal from substitute Jordon Brown earned a late point for Peterhead against Brechin Cit at Glebe Park.
Paul McLean had fired City ahead four minutes after the break but Brown's header from a Graeme Sharp cross four minutes from time earned the visitors a share of the spoils. It was a real body-blow for the City players to lose a late goal for the second week running after having put so much effort into the match.
There can be little doubt that if City had taken even half of the chances they had created, they would have run out as comfortable winners and unfortunately, those missed opportunities cost them a point. However, on the plus side, the work-rate and effort the players put in over the course of the 90 minutes was excellent and if they can begin to tuck away a good percentage of the chances they create then they can look forward to a good season ahead.
The Blue Toon went on the offensive straight from the kick-off and Graeme Smith in the City goal had to look sharp to tip a 20 yard drive from Jamie Stevenson over the bar after just two minutes on the clock.
City hit back just a minute later when Peterhead keeper Graeme Smith came to his team's rescue, sticking out a leg to prevent a Bobby Barr close-range shot from entering the net.
City came close again in the 25th minute when a great run and shot from Callum Tapping went just over the bar and three minutes later, Smith did well to block a drive from Barr who had weaved his way into the visitors box after collecting a great flick from Robert Thomson.
The hosts kept up the pressure and they should have taken the lead from the penalty-spot in the 35th minute when Tapping was upended in the box by Graeme Sharp but Smith brought off a great save from Andy Jackson and the visitors keeper was called into action again five minutes before the break when he deniedThomson after a great run from Jackson had created the opportunity. City started where they left off after the break and they grabbed the lead four minutes into the half in what was a personal disaster for Blue Toon midfielder Jamie Redman. Tapping delivered a free-kick into the Peterhead box and Redman in attempting to clear completely missed the ball and Paul McLean was on the spot to slot it past Smith.
The visitors tried to hit back but a long-range effort from David Cox after 62 minutes was well wide of the target and the same player's 25 yard drive a couple of minutes later had the same outcome.
Peterhead were battling to grab the equaliser and they scorned a good opportunity in the 75th minute when a good cross from the right from Stevenson was blasted wide by Steven Noble.
However, it was City who came close to scoring again with ten minutes remaining when a McLean header from a Tapping free-kick went narrowly past the post.
The Blue Toon were coming forward at every opportunity though and they grabbed a dramatic leveller with four minutes remaining.
Graeme Sharp picked up the ball wide on the right and delivered a great cross into the City box for substitute Brown who powered a header beyond the despairing arms of Smith.
