Forfar Athletic 0 Brechin City 2
Brechin City extended their unbeaten run to eleven games and inflicted the first home defeat of the season on Forfar Athletic after a thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory at Station Park.
Jamie Masson, playing his last game for the team before returning to parent club Aberdeen set his side on the victory trail after just twelve minutes slotting the ball home from close-range after great play from Bobby Barr and Alan Trouten made sure of the points nine minutes from time after Craig Wighton had created the opening.
It was a disciplined and impressive performance from a City team who looked comfortable on the ball throughout the ninety minutes and who never allowed the opposition to create any clear-cut chances.
Manager Ray McKinnon made just one change to the side that defeated Stenhousemuir at Ochilview two weeks ago with youngster Craig Wighton coming in for Kyle McAusland whose loan period with the club concluded last Saturday.
The Loons were first to threaten after seven minutes when Gavin Swankie fired a 20 yard drive wide of the target and three minutes later, a Stephen Husband free-kick was headed past Graeme Smith's right-hand post by Scott Smith. Shortly afterwards, Paul McLean had to look sharp to clear away a dangerous Swankie cross from the right but City then went straight up the field and scored with their first real attack of the match.
Bobby Barr dispossessed Omar Kader wide on the left touchline and pushed forward to the edge of the Forfar penalty area before delivering a good ball into the box for JAMIE MASSON who kept his composure to slot the ball past Rab Douglas.
It could have been 2-0 six minutes later when another great run and cross from Barr was blasted just wide by Alan Trouten.
Forfar tried to hit back, and Michael Dunlop headed a Dale Hilson cross from the left wide of the target. City then responded with an Andy Jackson drive being gathered safely by Douglas and in the 34th minute another great piece of work by Barr saw him cut into the Forfar box and fire in a shot which was held by Douglas. City had an even better chance just a minute later when Masson created space for himself at the edge of the box but he shot well wide of Douglas's left-hand post. City continued in the ascendency and in the last five minutes of the half, long-range efforts from Gary Fusco and McLean were saved by Douglas.
The Loons came out for the second-half looking to get a quick equaliser and a Jim Paterson 25 yard shot five minutes into the half was held by Smith.
City though we're looking to increase their advantage and in the 61st minute, a Gerry McLauchlan header from a Masson free-kick was saved by Douglas and the big keeper was called into action again just seconds later when he blocked a Craig Wighton drive.
Both sides the made substitutions with Craig Molloy replacing goal-scorer Jamie Masson for City while former City striker Chris Templeman came on for Kader.
Forfar then had a couple of half-chances. Swankie turned McLauchlan at the edge of the box in the 70th minute and fired in a drive which was deflected for a corner and five minutes later a Dale Hilson shot squirmed past Smith's left-hand post.
The home team then made a couple of substitutions with Gavin Malin coming on for Scott Smith in the 75th minute with Martyn Fotheringham replacing Hilson five minutes later. However, the ex City midfielder had barely been a minute on the park before the visitors wrapped up the points with another goal.
Craig Wighton who had been hugely impressive throughout the ninety minutes forced his way into the home penalty-box before slipping the ball through to ALAN TROUTEN who kept his composure to slot the ball past Douglas and send the large contingent of City supporters home in a happy frame of mind.
