Match Report - By John Hoey
Brechin City 0 Peterhead 1
An injury-hit Brechin city side missed the opportunity to move one place up to second top in the Ladbrokes League One table after going down to a narrow 1-0 home defeat from Peterhead at Glebe Park.
With Airdrie losing at home to Albion Rovers a City win or draw would have seen them move up to second place but ex City striker Rory McAllister put paid to those hopes scoring the only goal of the game thirteen minutes from time.
The visitors totally dominated the opening stages of the game in terms of pressure and possession but they were unable to seriously trouble City keeper Graeme Smith and it was City who had the first real opportunity of the match in the 17th minute when Connor McLennan picked up a pass at the edge of the box and powered his way forward and only a last-gasp tackle from Blue Toon defender Steven Noble prevented Connor from getting in a shot
City then began to exert some pressure themselves but couldn't create anything clear-cut in front of goal with the next opportunity coming the visitors way in the 28th minute when Jordon Brown played a delightful pass through to McAllister who looked set to score but he completely missed his shot with the goal right in front of him. The next two chances of the half again fell for the visitors in the closing stages with Paul McLean heading a Scott Brown chip shot off the line in the 44th minute and Graeme Smith clutching a McAllister header a minute later.
City started the second-half positively and they came close to opening the scoring within the first minute when Willie Dyer made ground down the left and crossed into the box for the waiting Alan Trouten but 'Trouts' steered his header wide of Graeme Smith's right-hand post. The Blue Toon responded immediately with Nicky Riley forcing his way forward into the home penalty-box only to be denied by Smith coming out to smother the ball at the midfielder's feet and Riley came close again seconds later when he found space at the right-hand side of the City box and blasted in a shot which was well over the bar.
City then pushed up the field with Smith saving a McLennan drive and shortly afterwards a Trouten shot was deflected for a corner.
Peterhead hit back and they made the vital breakthrough in the 77th minute.
Fiacre Kerraher who had been outstanding throughout picked up the ball on the right and flighted a great cross deep into the City box for McAllister who steered a looping header past Smith.
