BRECHIN CITY U 19’S 4 DUNDEE U 19’S 1
The Brechin City Under 19 side moved into the 3rd round of the Scottish Youth Cup following a comfortable and comprehensive 4-1 victory over Dundee at Glebe Park yesterday afternoon.
Matthew Adam with a brace, Craig Mitchell and Marc Walker were all on the mark for City while Greg Birmingham scored Dundee’s goal.
City put pressure on the Dundee defence as early as the 4th minute when Charlie Fertacz fired in a shot which was just wide of the target.
The visitors hit back and a Leighton McIntosh shot from a Birmingham cross hit the side-netting and seconds later a McIntosh header went just past the post.
In the 16th minute, City won a free-kick at the edge of the Dundee box but Jack Syme blasted his kick well over the bar.
The game was evenly balanced at this stage but Dundee surprised their hosts by grabbing the lead in the 16th minute.
Birmingham picked up the ball on the right and crossed into the box for McIntosh who had a simple task in heading the ball past Ben Tough in the City goal.
City though, were back on level terms within a minute.
Paul Anderson forced his way into the Dundee penalty-box and was then brought down and Craig Mitchell stepped up to blast a superb spot-kick into the roof of the net.
This goal gave City confidence and they deservedly took the lead in the 24th minute..
Marc Walker picked up a pass in the middle of the field and sent a great pass wide on the right to Matthew Adam who moved quickly into the box before slotting a a shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Tough came to City’s rescue three minutes later when he dived low to deny Birmingham.
In the closing stages of the half, City had a further couple of half-chances when Mitchell sent a great volley just wide and then Walker fired in a shot which was also just wide of the target.
City kept up the momentum at the beginning of the second-half with Dundee keeper Garry Johnson bringing off a point-blank save from Fertacz.
City were powering their way forward and they moved two goals ahead in the 54th minute when Walker scored from close-range after two previous efforts had been blocked by the Dundee defence.
City were well on top and they came close to increasing their lead in the 62nd minute when Liam Leiller collected the ball on the left and cut into the penalty-box before firing his shot just wide of the near post.
With eleven minutes remaining, City wrapped up the points and capped a fine team performance with a fourth goal.
The ball was played wide on the right to Adam who moved at pace into the Dundee penalty area before firing a low drive into the bottom corner of the net.
