Under 19's Beat Montrose - By John Hoey

Brechin City’s Under 19 team defeated near neighbours and local rivals Montrose by 2-1 in tonight’s league game at Glebe Park.

Paul Anderson opened the scoring for City after only two minutes and although the Gable Endies equalised through Dale Reid in the 19th minute a goal from Liam Scott midway through the second-half wrapped up the points for Brechin.

City started strongly and they grabbed the lead after only two minutes.

A corner from the right fell kindly for Anderson at the edge of the box and he wasted no time in firing home a superb right-foot drive which gave visiting keeper Matthew Smith no chance.

Montrose came right back at City and Tom Scott tried a shot from the edge of the box which was well wide of the target.

The Gable Endies kept up the pressure and they grabbed the equaliser in the 19th minute when Reid showed great composure and skill in the City box, beating a couple of defenders, before slotting the ball home.

Charlie Fertacz had an opportunity for City three minutes later but he shot straight at the keeper.

Montrose were unlucky not to get their noses in front in the 31st minute when a Scott header came back off the bar before being cleared and it was City’s turn for bad luck just a couple of minutes later when Fertacz expertly beat a couple of defenders in the box before firing in a shot, but keeper Smith brought off a point-blank save.

City started the second-half with Matthew Adam replacing Fertacz who had picked up an injury just before the break.

The hosts won a free-kick in the 56th minute but Michael Potter shot high over the bar and three minute later at the other end a Sean Kelly drive was wide of the target.

City kept pressing and they got their reward when they regained the lead in the 64th minute with a fine goal.

Marc Walker slipped a good pass to Liam Scott who kept his cool and composure before slotting the ball home.

City kept up the pressure with the pace of Adam on the right posing problems for the Montrose defence, and on the hour mark there was a further change when Steven Duffy replaced Liam Keillor.

Although City had the bulk of possession, they had a narrow escape in the 73rd minute when keeper Ben Tough parried a shot from Montrose substitute and Potter cleared off the line and a couple of minutes later the keeper came to City’s rescue again when he tipped an Owen Bryce shot over the bar.

The visitors were pushing hard in the final minutes and Tough was again the saviour a couple of minutes from time when he brought off a point-blank save from Kelly.
