Brechin 3-2 Arbroath - By Steven Mew

Brechin started tonights friendly hoping to keep up the good results after drawing with SPL outfit Dunfermline, beating local rivals Forfar and thrashing Partick Thistle.

Brechin fielded a weakened side. New recruit John Hillcoat started between the sticks while Paul Deas, David Craig, David White and Craig McEwan all started in defence. The midfield consisted of Ally Mitchell, Grant Johnson, Craig Winter and Kevin Byers while Paul Ritchie and Steven Hampshire posed a threat upfront. Arbroath fielded 4 former Brechin players, in Roddy Black, Greg Miller, Marc McCulloch and Jay Stein.

The start of the game was fairly uneventful, but the game sparked to life as Brechin opened the scoring after 10 minutes. Steven Hampshire latched onto a through ball and slotted the ball into the corner past the despairing Neil Inglis. Just minutes later at the other end Jay Stein hammered a volley well wide of the goal from an awkward angle.

Brechin had a glorious chance to make it 2-0 mid-way through the first half. Paul Ritchie lobbed the ball into the box from the left before Craig Winter blazed the ball over the bar when it looked easier to score. He showed his frustration by kicking the advertisment board.

However, shortly after, Brechin did get the 2nd goal they deserved. A clever run from Kevin Byers saw him get to the byline before firing low into the box, the ball appeared to come off an Arbroath defender before trundling into the net. That was the last action of the first half.

Into the second half Byers came close to adding a 3rd as he cleverly rounded Inglis before tapping the ball goalwards, only for an Arbroath defender to block with a last ditch effort.

Against the run of play Arbroath pulled a goal-back. Two former Brechin players were involved in the goal as Jay Stein made an excellent run up the left hand side before supplying a cross for Greg Miller, who headed into the net.

Shortly after, Brechin restored their two goal advantage. Arbroath defenders claimed Paul Ritchie was offside but the referee waved on and Steven Hampshire took the ball into the box before cutting the ball back for Paul Ritchie who made no mistake from 6 yards.

Just minutes later Arbroath were back into the game as David Craig brought down Mathu King clumsily inside the area. Former City midfielder Marc McCulloch made no mistake from the spot, sending John Hillcoat the wrong way.

That appeared to be the last action of the game and Brechin continue their unbeaten start to the season.
