Ayr United - Brechin City Match Preview - By John Hoey

Ayr United - Brechin City Match Preview.

Brechin City will be looking to keep their current run of form going when they visit Somerset Park to play Ayr United on Saturday.

The players enjoyed their last training session at their Stirling University training base this afternoon (Thursday) before the Christmas festivities commence and everyone is looking forward to the match against the Honest Men.

Manager Darren Dods looks likely to say 'same again' as far as his starting line-up is concerned with the players who did so well against Peterhead and Stranraer looking odds on to get the thumbs up for the match against Ian McCall's side although the manager himself will miss out because of suspension.

This will be the fourth time this season that the teams have met with the score-line standing at two victories for Ayr with one draw.

In the first match between the sides, a Scottish League Cup tie played at the beginning of August at Somerset Park a goal after twelve minutes from former City player Gerry McLauchlan set his team on the road to victory with Paddy Boyle adding a second goal shortly after half-time. It was another home victory just a fortnight later in the league when the hosts had a narrow 2-1 win. Allan Forrest fired home the opener for the Honest Men after twenty minutes but Robert Thomson scored the equaliser with just over twenty minutes remaining only for another former City player, Alan Trouten to slot home the winner from the penalty-spot five minutes later.

It was again a close affair at the Glebe in early November when the sides shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. James Adams had given the visitors a 1-0 half-time lead with Isaac Layne deservedly netting the equaliser shortly into the second-half.

City will enter the game on the back of two excellent results, the 1-1 home draw against Peterhead followed by the hard-fought 2-0 victory over Stranraer last Saturday whilst the Honest Men have lost their last two league encounters with Dunfermline Athletic coming out on top by 2-1 at Somerset Park a fortnight ago and Peterhead running out convincing 3-0 winners at Balmoor Stadium last Saturday. However, Ian McCall's title chasing side will be bolstered by the emergency 28 day loan signing of former fans' favourite Ryan Stevenson who looks set to go straight into the side but midfielder Ross Docherty will miss out through injury.

The referee for Saturday's fixture will be Category 1 official Nick Walsh who will be in charge of his first Brechin City match of the season.
