Airdrie v Brechin Preview - By Steven Mew

Brechin travel to New Broomfield tomorrow to take on an Airdrie side who currently sit comfortably away from the relegation zone above Stranraer, Queen of the South and of course, Brechin.

Airdrie’s problem this season seems to be inconsistency. Queen of the South recorded their first win of the season against Airdrie mid-way through October, yet two weeks later the Lanarkshire side bounced back to win 4-0 against Dundee! This season can be described as quite a success for Sandy Stewart and Airdrie, who lost the services of Alan Gow, Owen Coyle and Marvyn Wilson in the summer, all of whom are top class players at this level, and with limited resources Sandy Stewart has built a team capable of beating anyone in the division.

The two sides have only met each other once so far this season, which was back at Glebe Park in August, and ended in a share of the spoils. Colin Hardie strangely awarded Airdrie a penalty in the opening minutes but Craig Nelson was the hero as he got down well to deny Brian McPhee from the spot. City then went and opened the scoring through Grant Johnson, but the Diamonds equalised late on thanks to Stephen McKeown’s goal.

City will be without the suspended Gary Bollan, who was sent off last week-end against Hamilton for remarks made to the linesman after Craig McEwan had been bundled over by an Accies forward. While the injury list is starting to clear up, there are still quite a few doubts for the game. Captain Paul Deas, Steven Hamilton, Alex Burns and Steven Hampshire are all likely to miss out. Airdrie have been boosted by the return of Gary Twigg, who returns to action after ankle ligament damage. Sandy Stewart will however have to make-do without Stephen Docherty and Brian McPhee, who are both suspended.

The Brechin Fans will be in sections A & B of the main stand. These turnstiles are at the far right hand side of the main door.

The cost is £15 adult and £10 concession. Normally under 12s are £7 but due to the generosity of a sponsor they will all get in free on Saturday. Anyone of this age should visit the club shop where they will be issued with a voucher which will get them free entry at the gate.

The Brechin City supporter’s club is organising a bus for tomorrow’s trip to Airdrie United. The bus will leave St Ninian’s Square at 11:15am. To book a seat contact Jim Craig on (01356) 623151.
