Brechin City v Dundee United: Match Preview - By Grant Hood

Brechin City welcome Dundee United to Glebe Park for the first time in over 30 years, as the two sides clash in the Ladbrokes Championship separated by length of the league table.

Whilst Glebe Park will be an unfamiliar venue for many of the visiting players and supporters, the Tannadice side will go into the game as firm favourites over a City side yet to record their maiden victory in The Championship. Darren Dods side will be encouraged however by a hard-fought Scottish Cup victory over Buckie Thistle last weekend, resulting in the mouth-watering prospect of a visit to Cup Holders Celtic in January.

Player news from the City camp pre-match sees the continued absence of injury victims striker Andy Jackson and defender Ryan McGeever. Aberdeen loanee Connor McLennan returns to the squad after being unavailable for the Scottish Cup Tie whilst Gary Fusco is rated 50/50 due to a foot injury.

The match will be refereed by Barry Cook, who is making his second visit to The Glebe after taking charge of City’s 1-1 draw with Falkirk in August. He will be assisted by Michael Banks and Jonathan Bell.

The match is being kindly sponsored by Wm Fraser Potato Merchants, which sees Alistair Melrose and his guests as welcome return visitors to The Boardroom. The Matchball has been sponsored by Anthony Carr, and the Club passes on grateful thanks there too.

Supporters of both sides are reminded that, on police advice, segregation will be in place. Brechin City fans are asked to enter via the Cemetery End turnstiles and occupy the terracing behind and adjacent to the goal at the Cemetery End, with limited seating available for Season Ticket holders in the Centre Stand. Cash Turnstiles will be in operation, including the popular Parent & Child entry.

Dundee United supporters should enter via the main Trinity Road turnstiles and occupy the David H Will Stand, and the terraced area down the hedgeside. The vast majority of visiting supporters have pre-purchased entry tickets, although a limited number will be available for cash purchase on the day.

Hospitality guests visiting the Platinum Lounge and City Club have been contacted specifically about entry arrangements and their reserved seating in the Centre Stand. The official pre-match bucket collection will be carried out by Brechin City Youths FC, fundraising for JDRF.

To mark the occasion, copies of Brechin City’s largest ever Matchday Magazine will be available for sale at each end of the stadium. This bumper 28-page edition is sure to be a popular souvenir, and fans should look out too for the Supporters Club 50:50 Draw Tickets and Whisky raffle.

With the weather taking a wintery turn in the lead up to the game, The Club is grateful to a number of volunteer helpers who have worked hard to get pitch covers installed with a view to protecting the playing surface and doing everything to ensure the match goes ahead as planned.

Club Chairman Ken Ferguson, updated fans during Friday stating, “Whilst there can be no guarantee that the game will not be affected by overnight frost, at the moment the playing surface is ok with protection covers down on the key areas normally affected by frost. Additional covers are to be laid this afternoon to provide some extra protection. If conditions overnight are similar to last night, as forecast, we should be ok but as always it’s a fluid situation. Obviously Brechin City are desperate for the game to be on and we are doing everything in our power to ensure that happens.”
