Alloa Athletic v Brechin City - Match Preview
- By
Steven Mew
City return to the scene of the incredible promotion triumph two seasons ago as we travel to Clackmannanshire to take on Alloa Athletic in the 3rd round of the William Hill Scottish Cup tomorrow.
Barry Smith's men will go into the tie as underdogs against a Wasps side who, following promotion last season, have settled reasonably well in the Championship and currently sit outwith the relegation places. Alloa were in action midweek as they went down 4-2 to a resurgent Dundee United side at Tannadice, with former City favourite Alan Trouten on target for the Wasps from the spot.
City meanwhile will be looking to bounce back from a heavy defeat at home to Arbroath last weekend which came as a shock to the system after such a convincing win over Forfar a week prior.
TEAM NEWS
With skipper Paul McLean continuing to sit alongside strikers Dene Shields and Callum Hendry on the sidelines, Brechin City's fledgling management team don't have their troubles to seek with no fewer than 3 new injury concerns in the lead up to tomorrow's cup tie. These will all be fully assessed in the 24 hours leading up to the game, although on the positive side, midfielder Jordan Sinclair has had some game time coming on from the bench latterly and could come into contention for his first start since September. The Club is grateful too, that the Management Team at Livingston granted permission for midfielder Cameron Blues to play in this Competition as part of his loan deal.
Manager Barry Smith said, "We know it'll be a tough task at Alloa. They've enjoyed a couple of Championship wins this season already (over Partick Thistle and Morton) although it was something of a surprise to see them lose out at Edinburgh City in the Irn Bru Cup last weekend. We had them watched against Dundee United at Tannadice on Tuesday night and know their strengths. Off the park too, Alloa are a former club of mine and I'm only too aware of the outcome of Brechin's last visit in the play-offs.
"It's a Cup Tie and everyone at the Club knows how important it is financially to progress to the next round - so hopefully our travelling fans can produce the positive kind of encouragement to help the players bounce back from what was a disappointing Saturday against Arbroath last weekend. We're going there to try and win the tie."

PREVIOUS MEETINGS
There were incredible scenes at the Indodrill the last time the sides met as City clinched promotion to the Championship via the playoffs in 2016.
Leading 1-0 from the first leg, City got off to a great start in Alloa thanks to a James Dale wondergoal midway through the first half to double the advantage. That was short lived though as a quickfire double from Greig Spence levelled things up before the break. The pendulum continued to swing in the second period with Alloa winning 4-3 on the day, drawing 4-4 on aggregate which forced a period of extra time which finished goalless and subsequently penalties. James Dale tucked away the winning spot kick for City to spark jubilant scenes in the away end - earning promotion against all the odds.
