St Johnstone v Brechin City - Match Preview
- By
Steven Mew
City are in action against Premiership opposition again this evening as we make the relatively short trip down the A90 to face St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park in the Betfred Cup.
After two defeats apiece for each side in the Betfred Cup so far, neither City or the Saints can progress from the group stage however both clubs will be keen to get off the mark in the competition and build some momentum for their respective league campaigns.
TEAM NEWS
Midfielders Luke Watt and Fionn McLeod Kay will miss the game through injury whilst Olly Hamilton will be unable to play against his parent club. Striker Ross Crawford is back available for selection whilst there may a new signing added to the squad - however this is subject to registration.
MANAGERS COMMENTS
Manager Barry Smith said, "We lost cheap goals against Ross County - they are a good team but we didn't do ourselves any favours with the goals we conceded. There were some positives to take from the game and the way we passed the ball in spells."
With St Johnstone already out of the competition, Barry is aware there could be a backlash from the Saints this evening, he said, "It's just our luck and they've signed Stevie May which gives them a boost but we've just got to get whatever we can out of the game. If we can't get a result then we need to look at getting our shape and fitness together.
MATCH OFFICIALS
The referee this evening will be Steven McLean, assisted by Graeme Leslie and Craig Ferguson. McLean was last in charge of a City game in February 2018 - a 1-0 defeat away from home against St Mirren. McLean also officiated the 5-0 defeat against Celtic at Parkhead a month earlier.

PREVIOUS MEETING
Brechin City 1-1 St Johnstone (City win 4-2 on pens) - 26th July 2016
The two sides met in the League Cup group section three seasons ago, with City emerging victorious on penalties. Andy Jackson gave City a first half lead however Chris Kane equalised for the Saints four minutes from time to force penalties. The Saints struck the woodwork twice in the shootout which allowed Ally Love to convert the decisive penalty to earn a bonus point.
