Brechin City v Elgin City - Match Preview
- By
Steven Mew
It's back to home comforts for City as we face two consecutive matches at Glebe Park, starting with the visit of Elgin City tomorrow afternoon.
City have already faced the Borough Briggs side at Glebe Park this season, having played out a 9 goal thriller in the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup last month.
Elgin currently sit just two places above City in the league table and a win for Mark Wilson's men could would see them pull level on points with the Moray outfit in League 2.
TEAM NEWS
City will definitely be without the services of young winger Olly Hamilton who will serve a one match suspension following his red card against Stenhousemuir last weekend. Fellow St Johnstone loanee Ross Sinclair continues to be sidelined through injury alongside Sean McIntosh. Striker Emile Ngoy picked up a knock last weekend and will be given every opportunity to prove his fitness ahead of the match tomorrow. After missing out against Stenhousemuir, Luke Watt has trained this week and will be available for selection.
MANAGERS COMMENTS
Manager Mark Wilson said, "I thought we were worthy of a point last weekend which is what makes it disappointing to come away with nothing. One set-piece outdone us as we looked strong defensively throughout the game. Lewis McMinn didn't have many saves to make and going forward I thought we looked dangerous but with some poor decision making. Overall I was pleased with the way we performed in the game and after two weeks in the job I am encouraged with what I've seen.
"Jonathan Page was a big loss for us in the Cove game and although he was touch and go for the match against Stenhousemuir, being the competitor that he is, he declared himself fit and I thought he played very well alongside Dougie Hill. Between the two of them they have bags of experience.
"I asked Scott Reekie to fill in at right back and I thought he did terrifically well. I had a chat with him about who he was going to be up against on that side and I don't think he gave him a second on the ball. He looked fit, he got up and down the park and his use of the ball was good - so I was particularly pleased with how he performed in a position that is foreign to him as he is used to playing a more central role in defence.
"The one thing that did disappoint me was the organisation at the corner we conceded from. We put things in place for a reason and if you don't follow it through then you get punished. The players understand that and it hopefully won't happen again.
"We're obviously a bit tight on numbers but we're still trying to bring a couple in which is difficult to do as there's only so many players that clubs are willing to loan out. We're also looking at free agents and hopefully we will have some news by Monday."
Looking ahead to tomorrow's game, Mark said "It's a good opportunity to bring ourselves level on points with Elgin in the table. We haven't had many sessions to work with the players but I saw an instant improvement from the Cove game against Stenhousemuir and hopefully we'll see an extra 10% again this weekend.
"It would be great to get a win to get us up and running and it could spark the start of a good run. It's been a tough season so far but the players are desperate for the three points. The players are still getting to know each other better now and hopefully they can put that across on the park. The one thing that we always ask is plenty energy and commitment - if we do that then we are confident we have the ability to get the win."

The match referee tomorrow will be Craig Napier, assisted by Anthony Cooper and Sean Henderson. Napier issued two red cards the last time he took charge of a City match, both of which were for Stenhousemuir in a 1-1 draw at Ochilview last season.

PREVIOUS MEETING
Brechin City 4-5 Elgin City - 13th August 2019
Despite a hat-trick for young defender Scott Reekie, City were knocked out of the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup in a quite incredible match at Glebe Park last month. The visitors found themselves two goals to the good after just 3 minutes thanks to goals from Shane Sutherland and Kane Hester. City fought back through goals from debutant Jonathan Page and Scott Reekie before Kane Hester put the visitors back in front. City pulled themselves level again on the stroke of half time through Reekie.
Two quickfire goals mid-way through the second half from Daniel Mackay and Kane Hester put Elgin in control of the tie but Reekie completed his hat-trick as the game approached stoppage time to set up a grandstand finish.
