Brechin City v Annan Athletic - Match Preview
- By
Steven Mew
After a 2-2 draw down at Galabank last weekend, City and Annan Athletic go again tomorrow afternoon in a Scottish Cup 2nd round replay at Glebe Park looking to earn a third round trip to face fellow League 2 side Edinburgh City.
TEAM NEWS
With the exception of experience defender Dougie Hill who continues to struggle with a thigh problem, Manager Mark Wilson should have a full squad to choose from.
MANAGERS COMMENTS
Looking back to the draw with Annan last weekend, Mark said, "We had two great chances in the first half and they scored straight away at the other end so that was disappointing. In the first half we didn't play nearly as well as we have been of late - I spoke to the boys at half time and told them that I expected a reaction. We made a few wee changes and they reacted brilliantly and showed a real desire to get back into it. We created some good chances and looked full of energy - towards the end of the game we were the stronger side. I was incredibly happy with the way we responded to going two goals down and we are hoping to start the match tomorrow like did in the second half last week."
It was noted last week that City's midfield 4 that started the second half were all teenagers, Mark said "I'm a big believer that the age doesn't really matter as long as they are good enough. I think the young players we have in that position are extremely talented. Matthew Knox came on at half time on the left wing and provided a pinpoint cross for the first goal. Olly Hamilton on the right hand side has incredible pace and will be a real talent in years to come - he showed that on Saturday. The two players in the middle of the park, Kieran Inglis and Paul Allan are so composed on the ball. The players showed real maturity to handle the threat that Annan possessed as well.
"It was great to see Sean McIntosh back from injury and I thought he strolled the game. It was surprising just how easy it looked for him having been out for so long and had only trained with the squad for a couple of sessions. He keeps himself fit and I thought he was great at right back. I managed him at Airdrie and whilst he can play in a number of positions, I know that's one that he is comfortable in."
Discussing the equalising goal from Paul McManus, Mark commented, "It was good build up play with McLaughlin coming in on his right foot and he picks a great pass. The movement from McManus was that of someone who has been playing at this level for a long time now and that comes with experience. The sharpness he has at his age is incredible. It was a terrific finish on the volley and he's been a real plus point for me since I arrived here. He's our captain, he is a handful for defenders and he leads the line very well. He works so hard off the ball so it is pleasing to see him being presented with the chances to put away.
Looking ahead to the game tomorrow, Mark said, "We have to have belief in ourselves - we did that in the second half last week and we'll be looking to continue that from the off tomorrow. I believe when you play well and start to get into that rhythm, it's hard to break that. Annan have got certain threats that we've got to be aware of and they showed that on Saturday with their two goals so hopefully we learn from that.

The cup replay tomorrow afternoon is of course as a result of last weeks draw at Galabank where City fought back from two goals at the back to grab a deserved draw.
