Pre-Season | Forfar Athletic 2-3 Brechin City - By Steven Mew

City followed up their last gasp draw at Montrose on Saturday with a thoroughly deserved victory over Forfar Athletic at Station Park yesterday evening.

Manager Mark Wilson shuffled his starting 11 with Lewis McMinn, Scott Reekie, Luc Bollan and Jimmy Scott coming in for Paddy O'Neil, Sean McIntosh, Scott Cusick and Rory Currie.

The hosts were first to threaten after 8 minutes when McMinn did well to push away a powerful effort from Jordan Allan.

City's first opportunity arrived just before the quarter hour mark when Jimmy Scott laid the ball off for Matty Todd who saw his effort flash wide of the post.

The visitors opened the scoring with 22 minutes on the clock. A free kick swung into the box by Dave McKay was headed home by a TRIALIST, despite the best efforts of McCallum to keep it out.

Forfar were just inches away from grabbing an equaliser two minutes later when former City winger Bobby Barr rattled the post from 20 yards.

The hosts did manage to get themselves on level terms shortly after when MURRAY MACKINTOSH fired a low shot which fizzed into the bottom corner from 30 yards.

Just after the half hour mark, Kieran Inglis tried his luck from range which didn't trouble McCallum. Connor Barron then came close when his drive bobbled in front of the Forfar keeper who gathered at the second attempt.

The Loons' should have been level on 36 minutes when a cross from Ross Meechan found Daniel Scally completely unmarked at the back post, however Lewis McMinn did well to get across his goal to block the header.

At the other end, the industrious Kierian Inglis dragged a shot wide and Jimmy Scott almost capitalised on a poor passback before flashing a shot wide of goal.

Stuart Malcolm's side started the second half well and won a free kick shortly after the restart when McMinn handled outside of his penalty box. Fortunately the City stopper kept out the set piece from Daniel Scally.

Jordan Allan then headed over the bar for the hosts and Scally was again in the thick of the action when he drilled low at McMinn after being set up by Bobby Barr.

After soaking up some early second half pressure, City got themselves back in front. A free kick swung in by Kieran Inglis was met by LUC BOLLAN who rose highest to nod into the far corner.

The hosts should have been level barely a minute later when a cross to the back post found substitute Cammy Breadner who headed over the bar when he really should have hit the target.

Mark Wilson made a double substitution shortly after the hour mark with Benjamin Luissint and Rory Currie replacing Matty Todd and Jimmy Scott. Further changes would follow five minutes later with Ross Brown, Scott Cusick and a trialist being introduced to the action in place of Luc Bollan, Jonathan Page and Kieran Inglis.

City would go on to double their advantage on 67 minutes with a flowing passing move that resulted in Scott Cusick crossing the ball in for a TRIALIST who, at full stretch, prodded the ball beyond McCallum.

The Loons' got themselves back into the game just four minutes later with another splendid long range effort. This time it was full back ROSS MEECHAN who let fly from 25 yards and the ball found the corner with the aid of a deflection.

Forfar huffed and puffed in the closing stages in search of an equaliser, but it was City who looked more likely to put the game beyond doubt. Scott Cusick, who looked lively down the right hand side after coming on as a substitute, stung the hands of McCallum whilst Bejamin Luissint saw his effort from the edge of the box sail well over the bar.

The referee called time as City sealed a welcome pre-season win against their Angus neighbours. Manager Mark Wilson and Assistant Simon Donnelly can again take plenty of positives from another game against higher league opposition.
