Pre-Season | Brechin City 1-7 Aberdeen - By Steven Mew

City's pre-season preparations continued as they were put to the sword by a strong Aberdeen side in front of a healthy crowd of 2,034 at Glebe Park yesterday evening.

It was a tough night for Andy Kirk's men who, already without the services of Euan Spark and Nathan Cooney in defence, were further disrupted by injuries to Kieran Inglis and Hamish Thomson within the opening 25 minutes.

The visitors were first to threaten after 4 minutes when Christian Ramirez found the side netting with a header, before Mason Hancock dragged a shot wide of goal from range.

Kieran Inglis, who had gone down clutching his hamstring within the opening exchanges, eventually came off after 17 minutes to be replaced by Fraser MacLeod.

Just two minutes later the Dons were in front. A cross into the box was headed down by Besuijen for Hayes who saw his strike blocked on the line by McHattie but CHRISTIAN RAMIREZ was on hand to slam the ball home from a few yards out.

The advantage was doubled on 24 minutes. A long ball over the top found VICENTE BESUIJEN who showed the City defence a clean pair of of heels before advancing on goal and dinking beyond Wilson.

Hamish Thomson limped off for Michael Cruickshank shortly after the goal before City had their first real effort on 28 minutes when Iain Davidson fired over from range.

The Dons made it three when Matty Kennedy delivered a low cross into the box which was met by VICENTE BESUIJEN who curled into the corner.

City produced their best move of the half just before the break. Cammie Ross and Grady McGrath linked up with the former laying the ball off for Fraser MacLeod who saw his strike go wide of goal.

Shortly into the second period, there were shouts for a Brechin penalty when McGrath went down under the challenge of Hancock however referee Chris Fordyce waved away any claims.

Summer signing Dante Polvara unleashed a shot at goal on 50 minutes which Wilson was equal to, with Aberdeen players none too happy with the late challenge that followed from City skipper Iain Davidson on the American midfielder.

Two minutes later City came close when Northcott sent Ross scampering free down the left hand side. The City attacker saw two shots blocked before McGrath sliced over with the rebound.

Almost immediately up at the other end, the Dons added to their advantage. Lenny Wilson was off his line quickly to deny Jonny Hayes on the edge of the box, however the ball rebounded to MATTY KENNEDY who calmly curled into the net from range despite the best efforts of Cruickshank to keep it out.

Things got worse for City just a minute later. Again Wilson was dispossessed on the left hand side of his box and a cross from Polvara was flicked onto the bar, however JONNY HAYES was in the right place at the right time to nod in from a few yards out.

On the hour mark, Seth Patrick threatened for City when he shot over the bar following some good work from Marc Scott.

After 62 minutes the visitors made seven changes with former City loanees David Bates, Jack Milne and Connor McLennan all taking to the field.

City were awarded a penalty on 65 minutes when Marc Scott was hauled down inside the box by David Bates. With regular penalty taker Kieran Inglis substituted earlier, GRADY MCGRATH confidently slotted into the corner, sending Joe Lewis the wrong way.

It only took the Dons a few minutes to restore their five goal advantage. Jonny Hayes fired in a low cross from the left hand side which was converted by substitute LIAM HARVEY at the back post.

With ten minutes left on the clock, Aberdeen rounded off the scoring as they made it 7-1. Jack Milne flighted a ball into the box which was fumbled by Wilson and fell kindly for MARLEY WATKINS to slot into the empty net.

Wilson was replaced by a trialist following the goal, with a trialist striker also replacing goalscorer Grady McGrath upfront.

The visitors did have the ball in the net 6 minutes from time when a lob from Hayes was bundled over the line by Harvey, however the linesman had his flag up for offside.

Overall it was a real workout for City against Premiership opposition although they will be bitterly disappointed with the scoreline. Our pre-season schedule continues as we take on local side Brechin Victoria at Glebe Park on Saturday (1:30pm kick off)
