Match Preview | Brechin City v Lossiemouth
- By
Steven Mew
Having defeated title rivals Buckie Thistle last Saturday followed by a penalty shootout win over League 2 side in Stirling Albion in midweek, City will be looking to make a trio of successes in the space of 7 days against Lossiemouth at Glebe Park tomorrow.
City currently sit in 2nd position boasting a 100% record and with leaders Brora Rangers facing a tricky trip to face Formartine, a win for City here could potentially see them hit the Highland League summit for the first time.
Lossiemouth were handed a tough start to the season which culminated in them losing their opening 4 league matches. However the Coasters have picked up of late with three straight victories against Forres Mechanics (North of Scotland Cup) and Wick Academy and Strathspey Thistle in the league which has propelled them up to 11th position in the table.
TEAM NEWS
City will be without the services of Michael Cruickshank who is ruled out with a hamstring strain sustained in the victory over Buckie last weekend but will otherwise have a full squad to choose from.
MANAGERS COMMENTS
Reflecting on the cup win against Stirling Albion on Wednesday, Manager Andy Kirk stated, "We are delighted with our start to the season and we have found a way to win games and performing well in the process. Playing against teams in a higher division gives you the opportunity to see how far we've come and what we need to compete against these teams.
"It was a great finish from Marc for the goal. When you've got more time you start to overthink things but he kept his composure, took the keeper on and slotted into the empty net.
"As a team we know that we need to do better around the 18-yard box. We need to take more chances when they come along - too many times we try to be too precise with the finish as opposed to just smashing it in the goal.
"I haven't seen the footage of the offside goal yet but you have to question the fact he's come in at the back post and it looked like a squared ball more than anything. The pleasing thing is that Jordan got there from a wing-back position and Michael Cruickshank scored a few last season from a similar position.
"We were disappointed with the goal we conceded. We put a lot of effort in to get back but we just didn't deal with the player in the box.
"I was also disappointed with the penalty we gave away as we have to defend those situations much better. It was just a lob into the box and Lenny has to be more aware of his position and where players are but at the end of the day he rectified that with two class saves and he produced again in the shootout. That's his job at the end of the day but he's doing really well for us.
"This year we have a more settled squad and there is a real team bond. The effort and commitment they put in at training and on matchdays is reaping the rewards and we've got to keep pushing that."
Attention now turns to the league fixture against Lossiemouth tomorrow, with Andy adding, "Tomorrow is a big game - it's as big a game as we've had this season for me. We're coming off the back of a good week but Lossiemouth will pose a completely different challenge. It doesn't matter who we are playing - we have to maintain those high standards and push them even further. If we can get a few goals that would be fantastic but the main thing for me is the performance and the 3 points."
