Match Preview | Turriff United v Brechin City
- By
Steven Mew
City will look to put last weekend's Scottish Cup penalty shootout defeat firmly behind them as we turn our attention back to league duty with a trip to face Turriff United tomorrow afternoon.
Both sides go into the game having exited the Scottish Cup last weekend. Despite a great effort from 10-man City, they ultimately lost 8-7 on penalties to League 2 leaders Stirling Albion following a 2-2 draw after extra time.
Turriff, who were re-instated in the Scottish Cup following a registration error by Banks O' Dee, were unable to take full advantage as they went down 5-2 to East of Scotland side Dunipace.
City will be aiming to continue their fine league form which has seen them go unbeaten so far this season. They come up against a Turriff side who have greatly improved from last season and currently sit in the top half of the table.
TEAM NEWS
City lodged a successful appeal against the red card issued to Fraser MacLeod last weekend which was reduced to a yellow - this means the young midfielder will now be available for tomorrows match. Defender Hamish Thomson continues to miss out however Andy Kirk should otherwise have a full squad to choose from.
MANAGERS COMMENTS
Reflecting on the Scottish Cup tie against Stirling, Manager Andy Kirk commented, "The players performed well and gave everything that they had in the tie. Stirling are top of their league for a reason and it shows we aren't far away from the league above us quality wise. I was pleased with the players and the performance overall was great. To go out on penalties is always harsh - somebody has to lose and unfortunately it was us. The players are giving everything on the pitch and I think the supporters can see that.
"It was a couple of moments from set-plays that cost us - the free kick that's given for the second equaliser is never a foul for me. As frustrating as that is, we still had to defend the set play and we didn't do that well enough for either goal. Who knows if we had Fraser (MacLeod) on the pitch for the remainder of the game we could have gone on and scored the winner.
"The challenge is now to get back into the SPFL and that is something that, as a club, we'd love to achieve. It's going to be difficult as the Highland League is strong and competitive and there are a number of teams that will be up there challenging. We just need to keep doing what we're doing, keep progressing every week and perform consistently."
Ahead of tomorrow's match, Andy also added, "It's going to be a tough game at Turriff - they have a young squad and there is always plenty of enthusiasm that comes with that."

PREVIOUS MEETING
Turriff United 0-5 Brechin City - 17th November 2021
City ran out comfortable winners in the last meeting between the sides at the Haughs in November last year. Loanee Max Kucheriavyi gave City the ideal start after just 4 minutes before further goals from Iain Davidson, Marc Scott and Julian Wade had City 4-0 up and threatening to run riot just before the half hour mark. The home side tightened up at the back and it took until stoppage time for City to round off the scoring through David Cox.
