Match Preview | Hamilton Accies v Brechin City - By Steven Mew

City will make the first of two journeys to the ZLX Stadium in the space of a week as we travel to face Hamilton Academical in the Viaplay Cup this evening.

With fellow group C side Clyde currently ground-sharing with Hamilton, it means City will be at the same venue again next Tuesday.

Brechin head into the match off the back of a 3-0 defeat against Livingston at the weekend, but can take great credit from the way they performed against the Premiership outfit.

Hamilton meanwhile were 3-1 winners over Clyde in their opening game. John Rankin's side, who were relegated from the Championship last season, have recruited well over the summer and will be sure to pose another tough test for City this evening.

TEAM NEWS
With the exception of Anthony McDonald who is struggling with a back problem, City should have the rest of the squad available for tonight's match.

MANAGERS COMMENTS
Following the defeat against Livingston in the opening group match, Manager Andy Kirk said, "It's hard to us to compete against a team like Livingston - they have a lot of quality players and they are levels ahead of us. The game was about concentration, discipline, keeping our shape and frustrating them. I thought the boys were great - we made a mistake just before half time which led to the opening goal and when you do that against these teams you get punished. The third goal came from a misplaced pass but it was a bit of quality from Livingston, within a couple of passes they had the ball in the net.

"There are a lot of things for the players to learn from but still a lot of positives. We were excellent in terms of effort and enthusiasm and we covered a lot of distance. The shape of the team was a bit different from what we would normally go with but the players carried it out the best they could, but they were up against top quality opposition.

"Everyone seems to have come through the game unscathed so with the exception of Anthony McDonald, we should have a full squad to choose from for Hamilton. It's going to be a tough couple of weeks for us."

PREVIOUS MEETING
Brechin City 2-1 Hamilton Academical (AET) - 28 January 2008
This will be the first competitive meeting between the sides for over 15 years - the last clash saw City edge out Accies after extra time in a dramatic Scottish Cup 4th round replay at Glebe Park.

Kevin Byers netted the winner with a tremendous strike, but celebrations would prove to be short lived as it transpired that City played two ineligible players in the tie and were subsequently expelled from the competition.
