Match Preview | Buckie Thistle v Brechin City
- By
Steven Mew
City return to the scene of their dramatic last-day Highland League title win tomorrow afternoon as we make the journey to face Buckie Thistle at Victoria Park.
Although tomorrow's fixture is not quite of the same significance as that day back in April, it is still a hugely important fixture for both sides who look likely to be battling at the top end of the league come the business end of the season.
Buckie currently top the division on goal difference with both sides on 22 points, albeit City have a game in hand over the Jags and 2 games over second placed Formartine United.
City head into the fixture off the back of a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Inverurie Locos, whilst Buckie were 3-1 winners at Rothes in midweek.
TEAM NEWS
City's only definite absentee will be Anthony McDonald for tomorrow's trip. Any niggles from midweek will be assessed in the lead up to the match.
MANAGERS COMMENTS
Reflecting on the narrow win over Inverurie Locos in midweek, Manager Andy Kirk commented, "We played Inverurie in the cup a few weeks back and I thought they played well that day. We won the game but they made things difficult for us and it was the same on Wednesday.
"Apart from the start of the game I thought the first half was good. We played some good stuff and got into some decent positions but we didn't threaten the goal enough.
"We changed the shape after we went 1-0 down and after that we started take a real foothold of the game but fair play to Inverurie - they defended well and they were hard to break down. We had to be careful with counter attacks and I thought we dealt with that quite well.
"Second half we started quite well and got the two goals and at that point we should have kept going but then we stopped playing a bit. If you don't score another then you run the risk of conceding and Inverurie had nothing to lose at that point. However we managed to dig in and get the win over the line.
"We brought Grady on at half time and he did what he is capable of doing. If he's performing like that then he's always going to score goals and create opportunities for other players. He'll have been disappointed that he never started the game but he came on with a fantastic attitude and he's won us the game again. When we needed him he was there for the team."

PREVIOUS MEETING
Buckie Thistle 0-2 Brechin City - 22nd April 2023
Very few City supporters will forget the last encounter between the sides as City netted twice in the final 4 minutes to clinch the Highland League Championship at Victoria Park on the final day of last season. It was a tense and nervy encounter which looked to be heading in Buckie's favour before Ewan Loudon netted in the 86th minute with a tremendous 20 yard strike which flew into the corner before Grady McGrath sealed the title with a second goal deep into added time.
