Match Preview | Buckie Thistle v Brechin City - By Steven Mew

City are Moray-bound tomorrow evening for what is set up to be another intriguing encounter against fellow title hopefuls Buckie Thistle at Victoria Park.

City will return to the scene of their Highland League title-clinching game at the end of last season and know a similar outcome tomorrow night would put them in a strong position going into the final 5 games. Gavin Price's men currently sit 10 points ahead of tomorrow's opponents in the league table, although the Moray side have two games in hand.

Buckie Thistle lost some ground in the title race following a 3-1 defeat up at Wick at the weekend and City will need to wary of the 'wounded animal', especially when you take into consideration the Jags' impressive record against the top sides in the division this season.

TEAM NEWS
City will continue to be without Sean Hastie whilst tomorrow will probably come too soon for Marc Scott after coming off injured at the weekend. Anthony McDonald has managed to come through another training session with no ill effects and it is hoped he will be able to return to the matchday squad very soon.

MANAGERS COMMENTS
Manager Gavin Price was a happy man following his sides' 5-1 win over Turriff United at the weekend, he said, "I thought we carried on from where we left off against Clachnacuddin last week and I thought we were really positive throughout. We created a lot of chances - it was a good performance and a lot of positive individual performances as well.

"The goal we conceded was a poor one to lose and I think the stats show it was their only attempt on goal in the game. It was poor marking and loss of concentration from our part which is frustrating."

Danny Handling impressed as he netted a hat-trick, with Gavin adding, "Danny gets into great positions and a lot of the goals he's scored have been from close range. His goal contribution since he's come in has been really good. He's looking a lot fitter and sharper these past 2-3 weeks and I think we're starting to see the best of him now at a crucial stage of the season. I know the quality he has and that's the reason why we've brought him to the club."

Looking ahead to the vital game against Buckie Thistle tomorrow evening, he said, "There's no getting away from the fact it's an important fixture and although it's the same 3 points at stake, this has a bigger bearing. It's a great opportunity to put ourselves in a stronger position and we'll be in good shape if we can get a positive result - that's the way we've got to look at it.

"I've watched Buckie's games against the top sides and they are very good at what they do. I think the game was pretty even at Glebe Park last month and we lost out when we probably shouldn't done due to a couple of bad errors. We do need to play better than we did in that game however and we'll hopefully improve on that tomorrow night. I think we're in better form now and everyone at the club is looking forward to the game."

PREVIOUS MEETING
Brechin City 2-3 Buckie Thistle - 17th February 2024
Buckie Thistle ran out narrow winners following a hotly-contested and evenly-matched encounter at the Carnegie Fuels Stadium at Glebe Park last month. Danny Handling gave City an early lead after 10 minutes, only for Max Barry to equalise a few minutes later. Josh Peters put the Jags ahead early in the second half but substitute Matthew Wright equalised for City nine minutes from time. It was end to end stuff but it was the visitors who snatched the points a minute from time as Max Barry bagged his second of the afternoon.
