City travel up to Balmoor tomorrow afternoon as they kick off the 2006/07 league campaign against Peterhead, who came agonisingly close to clinching promotion to the first division last season via the play-off’s.
Brechin haven’t won an opening fixture since 2001/02 when they beat Dumbarton 2-1 at The Rock thanks to a penalty from Kevin Bain and a goal from Charlie King. However, City have lost all their opening matches in the past four seasons and they will be looking to get a good result up north tomorrow afternoon.
City won their last pre-season friendly away to Hamilton Academical courtesy of a solitary goal from young striker Chris Geddes and go into this opening match full of confidence.
Peterhead were cruelly beaten on penalties by Dick Campbell’s Partick side in the 1st Division play-off final last season and will be eager to better that this season. The Blue Toon have signed striker Stuart McKay from Inverurie Locos while Gretna midfielder Bryan Gilfillan joined the club tonight which certainly bolsters the squad.
City haven’t travelled to Balmoor in a competitive match since February 2003 and they will be looking to repeat the scoreline they recorded that day as they ran out 3-1 winners with goals from Jamie Smith, Charlie King and Greg Miller.
City only have two injury doubts ahead of the match. Gary Bollan (calf) and Charlie King (Thigh) are unlikely to feature. Summer signing John Ward will also be unavailable as he is suspended. Meanwhile, Peterhead will be without Chris Hegarty who is suspended but wouldn’t have taken part anyway due to injury while Ian Good is extremely doubtful for the home side.
The match will be officiated by Mike Richmond while Neil Brand and Steven Duff will be running the line.
