Match Preview | Turriff United v Brechin City
- By
Steven Mew
City will be aiming to make it 10 consecutive wins in all competitions as we travel to face Turriff United at the Haughs tomorrow afternoon.
Both sides head into the game off the back of narrow victories in the Scottish Cup last weekend, with City seeing off Newtongrange Star at home whilst Turriff edged out Lowland League outfit Broomhill in Dumbarton.
Tomorrow’s hosts are currently without a win in their last 6 Highland League fixtures, although had won 3 consecutive matches prior to this. City of course will be looking to continue their unbeaten start to the campaign, having won 11 and drawn 1 of their opening 12 fixtures.
TEAM NEWS
City will welcome back Euan Spark through suspension whilst Ryan Ferguson continues to build fitness following his hamstring injury, meaning City should have a full squad to choose from.
MANAGERS COMMENTS
Reflecting on the Scottish Cup victory over Newtongrange Star last weekend, Manager Patrick Cregg commented, "All credit to Newtongrange - I thought they were well set up and they used every trick in the book to waste time. From our point of view we kept going to the end and managed to get the goal so that was pleasing.
"They were stuffy and made it hard but we kept our composure. If we had scored an early goal it would have been a completely different game but to be fair to them they minimised us to very few clear cut chances although we had all of the ball. Overall I was pleased with the players for their mentality to keep going and keep doing the right things."
Fraser Macleod continued his recent fine form with the winning goal two minutes into stoppage time. Patrick added, "I think Fraser himself would probably admit that he should have more goals, however what I will say is he is getting big goals for us and some match-winning moments. It was an unbelievable bit of skill by Ewan (Loudon) to set up the goal which I didn't appreciate enough at the time but having seen the goal back it was great awareness from him."
On drawing Huntly at home in the 2nd round, he commented, "If you asked us before the draw we would have asked for a home tie so we can have no complaints. Sometimes you need that element of luck but Huntly will come down here and fancy their chances of causing an upset. Likewise we will be looking to progress to the next round."
Attention turns back to the league tomorrow with a trip to face Turriff. Patrick said, "To get 10 wins in a row would be a terrific achievement and ultimately that will be the objective up there. Turriff will have that mindset as well and they coming into the game off the back of a win in the Scottish Cup last weekend too. We're expecting a tough game but it's one we're looking forward to."
