Match Preview | Lochee United v Brechin City
- By
Steven Mew
Attention turns to Thomson Park tomorrow afternoon as City travel to face Lochee United in what promises to be a fascinating Scottish Cup 1st round clash. It will be a return to familiar territory for City boss Ray McKinnon as he heads back to the ground where he first cut his managerial teeth with the Bluebells.
Adding another twist to the occasion, Lochee United’s manager Steven Fallon assisted McKinnon at Brechin during the latter stages of last season, and now finds himself plotting against his friend and former colleague.
Fallon’s squad will also boast plenty of local interest, with former City players Dean Easton, Kevin McHattie and Ewan Murray - all Brechin-based - now turning out in Lochee colours.
City will be eager to replicate their Scottish Cup form from last season where they progressed past Newtongrange Star, Huntly and Cowdenbeath to set up a lucrative fourth-round clash against Premiership side Hearts in front of a sold-out crowd.
TEAM NEWS
City will continue to be without the injured Dayle Robertson and Brad McKay, however Adam Hutchinson returned to training during the week and will be available for selection.
MANAGER COMMENTS
Looking back at the 6-2 victory over Forres Mechanics last weekend, Manager Ray McKinnon commented, "I was delighted in the end. Forres are a decent side - they work hard and have a good physical presence in their team. Their striker (Calum Frame) has scored a lot of goals this season and makes good movements - they tried to utilise that by playing over the top. We made a mistake for their first goal which was disappointing but I thought the reaction after half time was good. We didn't have the tallest team out but they put in a great performance.
"Dugald (Farquhar) came in and dealt with their wide player very well and Harry Craig had a very good debut but fell away a bit which is probably down to fitness and we had always planned to take him off. Upfront Finlay Allan worked really hard and showed good composure for his goals. I thought everyone played particularly well but we let them back into the game twice when we shouldn't have.
"There has been injuries in a few key areas over the last while and we felt we were a bit stretched so we needed to strengthen the team and I think the guys that have come in have given us something different."
Looking ahead to a return to Lochee tomorrow, he added, "I'm looking forward to the game and it will be a very good occasion. It will be a tough game as they are a decent side at that level. I know their Manager Stevie Fallon obviously and it will be a banana skin for us so we just need to approach the game the same way as we did last week."
