City v Ayr Preview - By Steven Mew

City take on Ayr United at Glebe Park tomorrow afternoon as both sides look to climb up the table after fairly respectable starts to the season. One thing both sides have in common is their lack of consistency. Ayr have a truly awful record at Somerset Park but have picked up some terrific results on the road. Meanwhile, Michael O’Neill’s men are finding it difficult to string a few decent results together, although the horrific injury situation hasn’t helped.

If results go their way, either side could go 2nd in the table if they pick up all three points in the clash tomorrow. Both sides will be undoubtedly fired up for the game as they try to put some pressure on league leaders Morton at the top. Ayr are currently in 5th place, just one place and one point behind City in the league table.

City were perhaps fortunate to pick up a point in their share of the spoils against Raith at the week-end but it could well be a very valuable point as Craig Levein’s rejuvenated Raith side will no doubt be very difficult to beat on their own patch, or indeed anywhere, this season. Ayr could not be denied their victory against Alloa last Saturday. In a dire match, The Honest Men came out top out of two teams who failed to perform on the day.

City are still without Steven Ferguson, Kevin Byers, Stuart Ferguson and Grant Johnson who are all injured, but the latter will be returning back to action very soon. Craig McEwan made his comeback from injury last week-end against Raith and came through the match unscathed and is available for selection. New Ayr signing Brian Reid sustained a hamstring injury on his debut and is ruled out. Martyn Campbell and Paul Templeton are also sidelined for the visitors but ex Forfar defender David Lowing returns from suspension.

If City are to continue challenging near the top of the league, this is one of the games they must pick up points from so City fans are urged once again to get behind the boys tomorrow afternoon.
