Morton v City Preview - By Steven Mew

After their bitterly disappointing defeat against Ayr last week-end, the last team City would have wanted to face is league leaders Greenock Morton, especially away from home, but that is the reality of tomorrows match as City look to get back on track after failing to win in their last two league matches.

Losing at home to Ayr last weekend was a major disappointment, especially when the defence conceded a couple of sloppy goals and the strikers failed to score at the other end. The team continue to create chances, but just can’t seem to find the net and City supporters believe that once we start converting more of the chances, Brechin are bound to give someone a real hiding but it is doubtful that will happen tomorrow afternoon as Morton have conceded very little in the league so far this season.

The league favourites Morton have started the season very strongly as expected, brushing some part time outfits aside with ease. They are still unbeaten in the league and have a very positive goal difference of +16. The Greenock side suffered a set-back mid-week when they were defeated 3-1 by Clyde in the semi finals of the Challenge Cup, but Jim McInally’s men will no doubt be eager to get back to winning ways tomorrow afternoon.

City have a remarkable record down at Cappielow, as they recorded two comfortable victories down there in the 2004/05 Championship season. In the two meetings, City netted five goals while Morton couldn’t muster a single goal on their home patch.

Michael O’Neill’s injury worries are starting to clear up rapidly as Stuart Ferguson has recovered from his injury and may feature tomorrow afternoon. This means O’Neill is only without long term absentees Kevin Byers and Steven Ferguson while Grant Johnson is a major doubt.

After their match against Clyde mid-week, Morton have no fresh injury worries but they are still without 1st team goalkeeper David McGurn and David McGregor who are both sidelined. Dean Keenan, who didn’t feature in the match against Clyde, should be fit enough to take part.

Let’s hope City are reflecting on a positive result come teatime tomorrow.
