Defensive Disaster Ahead Of Opener - By Steven Mew

David White- Suspended

City go into their game against Queens Park tomorrow fit and full of confidence but they will be without 4 first-choice players for the game. Centre half's David White, Scott Walker, John Ward and left sided player Stuart Callaghan will all miss out due to suspension.

Walker, Ward and Callaghan's suspensions are all hangovers from last season whereas Davie White is suspended after picking up a straight red in a friendly against Accrington Stanley.

White had punched a goal-bound header off the line and was given a straight red for his troubles. If he had known it would have kept him out of the Queens game then maybe he would have had second thoughts!

City manager Michael O'Neill was still unsure whether White would be suspended at the start of the week and may consider bringing in a defender on a short term loan deal. However, at the time of writing nothing had been confirmed.

O'Neill is understandably frustrated at the forced absence of key players but he is also refusing to let it worry him.

"We're missing four very important players but there is enough versatility in the squad to cope with that problem," he said.

"It isn't ideal because we want to shape the team for the best 11 to be on the park. Suspensions make that difficult but there are players who will come in and have a chance to stake their claim.

"And I believe that every player in our squad is now capable of playing in our regular team," he added.

Other than the suspensions, there is two players almost definitely out. Grant Johnson struggled with a long term injury last season and hasn't taken part in any of the pre-season friendlies, so he is highly unlikely to feature. Gary Fusco, a summer arrival from Cowdenbeath, is struggling with a knee injury and is short of match fitness.

Queen's Park, having won promotion from the 3rd Division via the play-off's last season, will be looking to get off to a good start against a suspension-hit City side.

It has been extremely quiet on the transfer front for Queens during the Summer, with only Martin Ure and former Ayr man Stuart McGrady signing for the Spiders.

Last season's top goalscorer David Weatherson has left the club to sign for 1st division outfit St Johnstone and Billy Stark will be hoping that the strikers currently at the club can bang in the all important goals after the departure of arguably their best player of last season.

Queens have no suspension or injury worries and will go into the game was a full squad to choose from.
