Charlie King Testimonial
- By
John Hoey
CHARLIE King, when a youth team player at St Johnstone, was once
described by then Celtic coach, Roy Aitken, as "The next Charlie
Nicholas".
Despite being a life-long "Hibee", it was from Celtic Boys' Club that
Charlie made the step up to McDiarmid Park from in 1996.
Having subsequently enjoyed stints with Saints, Livingston, Ross County
and Stirling Albion, Brechiners are delighted that Charlie has made
Glebe Park his permanent home, as he is an individual whose performances
on the park allied to his diplomacy and willingness to represent the
club at all times off it, are second to none.
Charlie was signed by Dick Campbell in the summer of 2001, a period that
began an unprecedented spell of success for us at Glebe Park. Having won
a first division championship winner's medal with Livingston in 2001 and
also a Challenge Cup win, thankfully it was a scenario that Charlie was
to repeat time and time again at the Glebe.
Perhaps most amazingly of all was Charlie's role in the 2002-2003
season, when Brechin City FC became the first SFL club to win back to
back promotions from Divisions three to one. Charlie's ten goals were
vital ingredients in the club's unprecedented success that season. The
same season also saw the club gain its first ever place in a national
cup final, despite going down 2-0 to QOS.
In the 2001-2002 season, Charlie helped Dick's side to win the Third
Division title in style, becoming the first team in the UK to gain
promotion (in March) and putting the club more importantly back into the second division.
He was also an influential member of the side that won the second
division title in 2004-05 and Charlie remains, to this day, a vital
member of the Brechin City squad. His start to this season, with nine
goals scored already, has him on course for his best ever return in
terms of goal-scoring and Charlie also appears to be relishing the
striker's role at 29 years of age alongside Rory McAllister.
Former City manager, Doug Houston, used to talk about being a stickler
for the "good guys" the lads who turned up to training got on with the
job, never caused any hassle and above all loved the game. Charlie King
ticks every box.
Charlie's second Testimonial Dinner takes place in the Northern Hotel on
Saturday night. The speakers are Sandy Strang and John Stiles, son of
former England and Man Utd player Nobby Stiles. The MC is former City
skipper and manager, Dick Campbell.
