Club Appeal - By Chairman

The Management Committee recently conducted a review of the first quarter of the season. The manager and players have of course to be highly commended for the excellent position we find ourselves in competing at the top end of the table as was our aim. With a good run in the Co-operative Insurance Cup under our belt the first quarter has to be judged a major success.

The one disappointing aspect of the season so far has to be the attendances at our home fixtures. Whilst the Club fully appreciates the difficult economic times everyone is facing we cannot help but be disappointed that the crowds are not increasing to match the performances on the park.

One aspect of running a successful team is that success brings with it increased costs. Brechin City has always strived to do the best we can by our players, one reason perhaps why players commit to the Club despite our geographical location. Winning games results in bigger bonuses, which we would hope would be compensated by increasing crowds, sadly this is not the case.

The finances of the Club are always difficult to balance, there will always be variable expenses and performance related sources of income such as the SFA Cup. This makes it difficult for the Club to accurately budget for the year ahead. One thing is sure however, we cannot continue to perform at the level that we are and have been doing for the past seasons with out the full support of the local community. Our loyal supporters, season ticket holders, sponsors and hospitality guests on match days are fantastic; however we must do everything we can as a community to increase attendances if we are to balance the books at the end of the season.

It’s easy to get out of the habit of attending games, in this regard I would ask all of our seasoned supporters to do all they can to encourage family, friends, work colleagues along to the game and what better games to start with than this weeks local derby with Forfar Athletic and next weeks SFA Cup tie with Annan Athletic. Let’s get behind the team and show the Manager and players how much we appreciate their efforts and just what the team means to the town.

Ken Ferguson.
