Morton Preview - By Steven Mew

City take on league leaders Morton at Glebe Park this afternoon hoping to stretch their unbeaten run of late. Michael O'Neill has some injury worries ahead of the match against the Greenock side who have only lost twice in the league this season.

City chairman David Birse believes the match will be entertaining, he said: "This must be billed as match of the day. Morton are obviously the team for everybody to beat. They haven't lost a home game and only twice on their travels. We have a formidable task but hopefully we can rise to the occasion and get something from the game."

"We've been on a great run since mid-October and our past record against Morton has been good. We may be struggling with injuries but we are still performing well. My one fear is that we're not converting enough of the chances that come our way."

Ton boss Jim McInally added: "They beat us in the CIS Cup and that is an indication of the task that faces us."

Both sides progressed to the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup last week-end. Morton recorded a fairly straightforward 3-0 victory against Annan Athletic while City edged out Preston Athletic 2-1, but the game was a lot more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.

Brechin have already played the 'Ton at the Glebe this season in the CIS Cup. On loan Celt Paul McGowan gave the visitors the lead in the first half but goals from Chris Geddes and Stuart Callaghan (pen) gave City a well deserved victory against the full timers.

City are without long term absentee Grant Johnson with an achilles problem while City skipper Steven Ferguson is doubtful. Regulars John Ward and Darren Smith may also miss out. This is a real blow to the manager as John Ward has been outstanding in the heart of defence this season and Smith always causes the opposition problem.

Meanwhile, Morton only have one fresh injury worry in the shape of Scott McLaughlin, having picked up a knock.

A reminder to supporter's that the game is NOT segregated. Both sets of supporters have the freedom of the whole ground.

City chairman David Birse is confident that City can reach the last 16 of the Scottish Cup after being paired with fellow 2nd division side Cowdenbeath in the third round.

David said: "I'm obviously delighted that we got to the third round. We made it difficult for ourselves a little as I thought we should have had it all finished in the first half after all the missed chances we had.

"The important thing though is that we made the chances and, although it looked close at two one, it was really comfortable for us at the end of the day.

"Of course the tie against Cowdenbeath is very winnable, so hopefully we'll get through that and draw one of the big guns in the fourth round.

"Even if we won and didn't draw a big team, being in the fourth round would bring a fair bit of money into our coffers."
