Russell Wins Top Award - By Steven Mew

Iain Russell
Iain Russell

City striker Iain Russell has been named the SPFA's player of the year for the Second Division. Russell, 24, has banged in a fantastic 22 goals so far this season to help the club reach the promotion play-off's.

Russell was up against both Peter Weatherson and Paul McGowan of Morton, and also Stirling's Chris Aitken, who were all short-listed. However, Iain Russell came out on top and he has proved to be a astute signing by Michael O'Neill, who signed 'Beany' from Dumbarton in the summer.

Russell had a slow start to the season where most of his appearances came from the substitutes bench, but since scoring his first goals in a City shirt with a brace against Stranraer in October, Iain has been in lethal form, which has seen him rise to the top of the scoring charts.

The supporters and everybody involved at the club would like to congratulate Beany on his prize and hopefully he can repeat some of his form next season, whatever division we may be in.

Russell was suspended for the win against Stirling at Forthbank at the weekend, but will return for the home match against Cowdenbeath on Saturday, which is the last LEAGUE game of the season. However, City will take part in the play-off's which will start with a home game next Wednesday, against either Stirling Albion (If City finish 3rd) or Airdrie United or Ross County (If City finish 4th). The return leg will take place on the following Saturday (May 5th).
