Hamps Scoops Divisional Award - By Keith Johnston

Congratulations to City forward Steve Hampshire, who was last night named Player of the Year for the Second Division. Hamps collected his prize at the SPFA awards bash in Glasgow last night, having been up for nomination with Chris Templeman, Paul Walker and Paul Shields.

It is the second time in three seasons that a Brechin player has won the award. Chris Templeman was the winner of it in 2002/03.

Hampshire has scored 20 goals this season, and that combined with his all round play over the course of the season was enough to impress his fellow pros. Ironically, it was when Chris Templeman left to join Morton that his real scoring form began. His lethal scoring run included a hat-trick over Berwick Rangers and numerous double strikes. He also collected the Bell's Player of the Month award for January, for all three SFL divisions.

The player, who joined City from Dunfermline last season, will be hoping to continue his good form against Stirling and Forfar at the end of this season. He will then look to take it into City's first division campaign next term.

The other award winners were Fernando Ricksen & John Hartson (shared SPL player of the year), Derek Riordan (young player), Russell Latapy (first division) and David Bingham (third division).
